So there’s a war between Catholics and members of drug cartels? In what way does this war manifest itself?

Because something doesn’t ring true. First you’re talking in terms of civilizations, then when challenged on your use of an obvious pejorative, you drag up an article from two years ago that refers specifically to the actions of a subset of people. Are you equating 'pre-Columbian civilizations" to drug cartels?

And referring to a Mel Gibson movie does nothing to support your case, even if you do caveat it. Have you any idea how far away his "historical"movies are from reality? Gibson (the woman-beating, alcoholic Catholic) reinvents large swathes of history to support his wishful narratives.

You see, what I think has happened here is this: You’ve been called out on a statement of typically religious bigotry, and have tried to find something - anything - that appears to validate your unwarranted use of a pejorative generalisation.

1. The Aztecs also had the legend of Quetzalcoatl. They believed that this god periodically returned to destroy civilization and replace it with a new one. The last time he came, he established the Aztecs and looked like a feathered serpent. He was also foretold to be coming in 1519 and appear as a ghostly human with flames coming out of his head. In a supreme coincidence, Cortez was a white European with bright red hair and a beard, and arrived in 1519. He fit the image of the prophecy perfectly.

Appreciate the (name removed by moderator)ut, Rolltide. I wasn’t sure if the legend of Quetzacoatl really had that much influence on the Aztecs’ relations with the Spaniards or if it had just been hyped up over the years. Would that have meant that they were more prone to “worship” the Spaniards (making it easy to exploit them) rather than rebel against them?

Can’t speak for Charlemagne, but I wonder if the reference to pre-Colombian savagery in comparison to the modern drug cartels has more to do with the idea of a culture that permits a negligent disregard for the safety of one’s own people. Generally speaking, the more “civilized” a nation, the more altruism that is practiced among the people. The term “savage” is used in contrast to what we consider to be the practices of high civilization.

How is this bigotry (if you can call it that) typically religious? Are you familiar with the great Roman historian Tacitus? His very definition of the Germanic and other northern tribes the Romans conquered was “barbaric”. This adjective had nothing to do with the deities the Romans worshipped, but rather with what they saw to be a vast difference in the comparative levels of cultural achievement between the two peoples.
