ACTION ALERT

The Tennessee House of Representatives will be voting this week on The Emergency Care of Rape Victims Act of 2005 (SB1670/HB0865.) This legislation will mandate Catholic hospitals to violate their Catholic mission by requiring them to refer all alleged rape victims to take contraception that may cause an abortion and provide written information that is contrary to our religious beliefs.

If passed, this bill would

Ø require hospitals to provide all types of FDA approved emergency contraception that may be abortifacients, including RU486, IUDs, and other “morning after” contraception that causes abortion;

Ø mandate *all *hospitals to provide emergency contraception to minors, including anyone claiming statutory rape.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has stated, “A woman who has been raped should be able to defend herself from a potential conception and receive treatments to suppress ovulation and incapacitate sperm. If conception has occurred, however, a Catholic hospital will not dispense drugs to interfere with implantation of a newly conceived human embryo.” Catholic hospitals which do not provide emergency contraception follow a treatment of treating the victim’s injuries, transportation to a sexual assault center, or other medical treatment needed by the patient.

Faithful Catholics must stop this bill which will compromise the religious principles of Catholic hospitals and Catholic medical professionals. It will pass without our demonstration of concern about this issue.

Hope we hear from Lizzie (new poster) later today. She is up to speed on Tennessee politics, Catholic hospitals and medicine.

As depressing as these state bills are, they signal progress. The Dark Side cannot simply go to D.C. and have such regulations imposed on the entire country as it once could. Costs a lot of time, money and effort to introduce them in state after state.

Of course people from Tennessee should e-mail but I feel like as Catholics we should all voice our opposition because this is clearly a religious bash because Catholic hospitals should not ever be obligated to go against Church teachings. If it passes here it will be everywhere.😦

Dear Lisa:

You’re right - This was important. Maybe you need another “Houseblessing” again, and, maybe he should start with your computer…

Let’s see what the people who are from Tennessee can do about this and what they think we need to do help.

This just might be one to alert Priests for Life and EWTN though.

Good find…

It’s encouraging to know that Congress is NO LONGER a “receptive place” for this kind of incidious legislation, but depressing to think that Tennessee just might be receptive to it, because I thought otherwise.

MIsplaced and misdirected compassion like that behind this law is dangerous, and will eventually be used to destroy the First Amendment Guarantee of Religious Freedom.

Goodnight.

And May God richly bless those who act to save His Little Ones, Michael

Yikes! Sounds like a parody of a magazine selection in a kinky porno bookstore.

How do these people get elected?

Sen. Steve Cohen is a member of Memphis mafia who corrupt the Tennessee legislature. Name a vice and you will find that Cohen has sponsored legislation to enforce it.

Cohen:
Voted against the gay marriage ban,

Pushed for ‘medical’ marijuana,

Pushed to increase the amount of marijuana a dealer had to sell before being punished for a felony,

Personally charges $50,000 to get people on the disability rolls,

Worked 20 years to get Tennessee the lottery, and

Tried to enact legislation to allow transsexuals to change their birth certificates thereby reflecting their new chosen sexual identities. Cohen said this was important for Homeland Security issues.

Lol…you beat me to it. I was just compiling a file on him. Only thing new I have is this:

Nashville City Paper:

“The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved legislation to expand the definition of a person to include an unborn baby . . .”

Sen. Steve Cohen (D-Memphis) cast the only ‘no’ vote, expressing concern that someone could be charged with murder at the night of conception. ‘I mean the sperm and the egg have just met,’ Cohen said. … A fetus would have to be able to survive outside of the mother’s womb before a perpetrator who killed the mother could face charges for double murder."

And we know, don’t we, that if the bill were changed to overcome this objection, he would have another…and another…and another…

TN State Senator Steve Cohen is known as the ‘Yuppie among the Bubbas’ but he claims he tokes up rarely and he only subscribes to Playboy magazine to read about sports.

Protecting the snail darter is supposedly more important than protecting the human fetus.

Amazing how we can ‘find’ the words “separation of church and state” which do not appear in the constituion, but specifcally these words do:** Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; **by forcing a Catholic hospital to do this, they are prohibiting their free exercise of religion.

I am tired of our legislators and courts twisting our consitituion to fit their agendas.

Me too. Picked up Mark R. Levin’s “Men in Black” yesterday. What a nice depressing (but informative) read for the memorial weekend holiday. I’ld quote some but would be here all night. It’s all good. The background on some former and current Supreme Court justices is astounding. You wouldn’t ask these people what day it is much less what laws we must live under.

Don’t see legislators as serious of a problem. There is always the next election. Or, if needed, one can move to another state (I have several times to escape punitive taxes and regulations which were turning my neighborhood into a sewer and threatening my livihood). But when the Supreme Court speaks, we all are impacted. And we can’t reverse what they do for years and years, if ever.
