I have a friend who is a Catholic but recently was telling me that he believes that we need to “Speak” our will and God will honor that because the Word is so powerful. So we need to “speak” against cancer and we will avoid it. Or speak against dimentia now so we can keep our faculties when we age. He can’t argue it rationally, but insists that “That’s how God works.” I know this isn’t true, but I’m wondering if anyone has heard of this argument in the past and has any specific resources I can direct him to since this is clearly NOT what the Church teaches.

Thanks!

You can tell him for a start that that sort of belief is directly contradicted by Jesus, who is The Word of God made flesh himself – in his Agony in Gethsemane, his prayer was not “My will is to not have to die on the cross, would you please honor this, Lord?” but "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass by. Yet not my will, but yours be done." If there was anyone who deserved more to be able to “speak” his will to God and have it hionored as your friend suggests, it was Jesus Christ. And yet the cup did not pass him by, and he went to his Passion.

It sounds a lot like the “name it and claim it” or “Prosperity Gospel” nonsense that seeks to turn God into a cosmic concierge.

Tell him to “speak” his will that when he rolls dice, they will ALWAYS land on a 6.

Tell him to “speak” his will that if he jumps off a cliff, he won’t be hurt.

Tell him to “speak” his will that no terrorist will ever kill in cold blood again.

Tell him to “speak” his will that his boss will give him a raise.

Tell him to “speak” his will that the laws of nature will conform to his wishes.

These examples may seem silly or extreme, but really this mentality that God will “obey” your “will” is absolutely, utterly ludicrous. God is the Creator of the universe, and we are his creations. He is wholly above us, and what we will is NOT at all going to affect Him.

You need to impress on your friend the fact that this mentality that he can control God or nature (1) has zero scientific or religious foundation, (2) will not benefit him in any way, and (3) will simply make him look foolish before other people when he “wills” something to happen, and the opposite occurs.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, you should take your friend to speak to a priest, and see his take on the matter.

Sounds like the ‘blab it, grab it’ aka ‘name it claim it’ gospel that most of the tv preachers fellow. :)😛
