I have a habit I’m struggling with that when I have trouble I commit a mortal sin. I’ve been going and asking the priest (we have two–either one is fine) if they can hear my confession. I feel like I’m being a pain. Since we have Confession twice a week would it be better to just not take communion and wait until regular Confession?

I am so tired of asking. I have no problem confessing it I just feel like they must be getting sick of hearing the same stupid sin over and over. I even told the Associate Pastor today, "I think for my Penance you should just tell me to stand in the middle of the freeway with a sign that says “Hit Me”.

I am just thinking maybe more time to sit and think might motivate me to not sin as much.

I’d just abstain from receiving the Eucharist until I confessed on one of the regular days of confession.
Then again, I like when priests hear confessions before every mass.

I should get a sign and hold it there with you on the freeway. You certainly are not alone in this.

My counsel is to go to Confession as soon as possible if there is mortal sin on your conscience. The peace that comes from Confession is priceless.

There have been times where I have gone to Confession and in less than a week, I am calling my Confessor and scheduling an appointment. He does not mind hearing my confessions over and over. In fact I would tell him the same things that you feel, “Father, you must be getting tired of hearing me confess the same things over and over again.” And he would tell me, that there are two kinds of people, there are saints and strugglers. The saints are in heaven. Well, I guess as long as I am a struggler I will need to confess again and again the same sins over and over again.

But there was a couple of confessions where I did not mention the particular sin I was confessing over and over again, and Father asked me about it, and I looked at him and said, “You know I did not do that sin this past week.” Wow talk about a moment of grace.

Perservere. That is only a tactic of Satan used to keep us away from the Confessional. Run, run to the Confessional as fast as you can.

I will be praying for you.

God bless.

I am thinking that Satan is trying to keep me from Communion because I keep getting these thoughts that I shouldn’t be taking it. Maybe you’re right about him being behind that.

Your comments are very helpful, thanks! 👍

Oh Satan hates it when we partake of Our Lord and will stop at nothing to prevent us from getting to do this.

Confession and then Communion if one is aware of mortal sin.

I am so glad that I could have been of help. I will keep you in my prayers to have a good Sacramental Confession. Pray for me as well, because I too have got to go to Confession. Perhaps we can get rid of our signs. 😃

God bless.

No problem,

What upsets me is when I have no knowledge of anything keeping me from the Eucharist and I STILL feel ike I shouldn’t take it. I take it anyway but I’m sure that’s the “Evil One” trying to keep me from communion.

Then get this…when I can’t take communion due to mortal sin but go to mass anyway so I can get the priest to hear my Confession after Mass I get in a horrible mood! I will often read a book, listen to my MP3 player  and not participate at all. It’s like the devil is just having a field day.

I told this to the Assistant Priest and he said that I should copy the prayer for Spiritually uniting with Christ when I can’t actually receive and then I can at least unite my thoughts and prayers and desires with Christ at the time everyone else is receiving.

I asked my pastor if asking for Confession outside of the schedule is OK and he said it was and not to “worry about it”. He said to just keep doing what I am doing and that breaking habits takes time.

Lorrie,

Glad to hear things are working out quite well. Seems like your priests are giving you great advice.

So you ready to ditch that sign and I’ll ditch mine? 😃

God bless.

Yes I am…after all, we are LOVED by God so much He was willing to die rather than spend eternity without us…thanks be to God.

I know the feeling. I’ve struggled with this recently myself. One time, I went to confession immediately before mass and still didn’t feel forgiven and felt like I should receive.

When it happens, take a deep breath, and ask the Holy Spirit to inspire your mind. Then reflect for a moment and if you can’t think of a mortal sin you committed, then you are okay to receive.

The trick is to be objective about it, and not let the feelings interfere. Even if you don’t “feel like it”, you should receive if you are in the state of grace. Think of it like going to the gym when you don’t feel like it, it still does just as much good for the soul!

This is excellent advice. The devil tries to get us to despair or gets us to focus on inconveniencing the priest, rather than on the state of our soul. There is nothing wrong with what you are doing.

Best of luck! I will be sure to pray for you!

Thanks so much for your excellent advice and for your prayers. I am new back to the faith and getting my life on a better track.

It’s so easy to get caught up in negative feelings. I also have an issue when I can’t take communion due to mortal sin. I know I can almost always get Confession AFTER the early morning mass and I’m upset I can’t receive so then I goof off and ignore the entire Mass just pouting with a horrible impatient attitude while waiting for the time when I can Confess. I have been known to read books, do crossword puzzles, text on my phone, balance my checkbook, listen to my MP3 player, daydream, pay bills, read my Kindle, organize my purse, plan my grocery shopping list, and check my email, all while sitting there angry and defiant and not participating at all. In my mind I can’t take communion so why bother.

One time I was the only one standing during the Consecration of the Host because I was reading and listening to music and didn’t notice everyone else was kneeling.

I talked about this with our newly ordained priest who I met after Mass for Confession and he said that I should print off “An Act of Spiritual Communion” for uniting spiritually with Christ during the Eucharist as we can do that in times when we cannot receive. I never even thought of that. I was so glad he suggested it and he gently explained to me that I should not be goofing off when I can’t receive. There is still MUCH the Lord and our Blessed Mother can say to me and ignoring mass shuts out God and the opportunity to help me grow.

I then realized that I am not coming to Mass to ‘put in a shft’ like a factory job but rather to experience God and what His will is for me for the day.

I am so appreciative that I have priests who are straightforward and help me see things I need to work on so no more MP3 player and all that other goofing off in Mass.

Thanks for your great feedback. Please keep me in your prayers.

Lorrie,
I know this isn’t funny, but this did bring a smile to my face as I’ve been known to get very belligerent at times too and could just see myself doing this. :o Of course, you are realizing this is not the best response and you are starting to address it.

I think your priest gave you good advice and it would be best to follow it. If he says it’s ok to set appt, then do it and try not to worry about it; trust him. And I like the advice about the spiritual communion too.

Like you, I’ve struggled with the confession/communion timing. I won’t take communion without confession if I’m in mortal sin and that gives me an extra edge in fighting sin late in the week bc I know I’ll have to sit out communion on Sunday.

One advantage I do have is being close to a church that has confession 5 days a week and I can often get there if I need to when my regular confessor is not having confession hours.

A most beautiful and human story with an incredibly positive ending. This is encouraging

Do not deprive yourself of the Sacraments- you need them to help you resist sin and grow in holiness. If you need to go to confession and it isn’t available, don’t be afraid to ask. When you do ask, be mindful that the priest is setting time aside for it without much advance notice- try not to take very long. Most importantly though, don’t ever avoid the Sacraments.

The Saints and Strugglers comment is so, so true. I doubt anyone alive has not confessed the same sin. But, confessing is a way to rid yourself of that sin. Either through guilt or the cleansing it gives to your soul.
Whatever your struggle may be. Confess, you are forgiven. You may fall but I pray you do not fall as fast. I have struggled with something and at times I just know in my heart that it is not the sin but letting God down, again is what I fear. The temptation may strike me but I think of how HE strengthens me not tempts me. And by this grace I feel temptation and I just pray for God to take it. I pray it away. I ask God to take the temptation as an act of penance that if he helps me struggle through it

I appreciate everyone’s comments. Unfortunately I have fell twice in three days with this sin and I recently relapsed into smoking again, which I know is bad due to my lung problems. I don’t know if the two are related but I’m going to mass this morning. I will have to sit out communion but I do NOT skip mass even if I have to catch the priest afterwards for Confession.

Please keep me in your prayers. I really like what everyone’s had to say, it helps me not beat myself up so badly.

God Bless and Happy Weekend Everyone!

Lorrie
