But how can any other human tell if someone is only saying oral prayers or is also praying internally and with the needed humility also?
I make no judgement on the efficacy of the prayers, or of the heart of the person praying,or of their humilty. I am simply saying that what I referred to as “speed rosary” is annoying and distracting to me personally.

I used to lead a small rosary group. The majority of members preferred the faster, but we slowed down because one person preferred it slower.

It was a great sacrifice to me to do so, and I at times had to overcome some irritation – it made praying much harder.

If I may say so, he was the slowest rosary prayer I ever have encountered.

I don’t know whether it was a good idea to do so of myself in retrospect, it was a good sacrifice but I should perhaps have gone with the majority so as to most benefit the greater part despite the slow-poke. It’s difficult enough to keep rosary groups together, one has to be careful.

But I took the faster members as spiritually more likely to be able to handle a cross like that, than the slow-poke being able to speed up. 🙂

This was online in real time by the way, we announced the mysteries and then had all the members say, ‘Amen’ at the end of a decade, then announced the next mystery after the last Amen, and so forth.

A lot of faster people I am sure wound up praying twenty, thirty Aves for the same decade because of this. lol.

I want to listen to these monks and learn from them! 🙂

Yes, I’ve found a faster rosary can be more beneficial to me because I am less prone to distraction. In some cases it can be good to go slowly too.

I am not someone who is going to say either way is wrong, each person is of a different temperament regarding what is most useful.
Stole the words right out of my mouth! 😉

I don’t think speed is necessarily a function of holiness or piety. (I can’t believe I just used a math analogy!) 😛 While I prefer to say it at a “medium” speed, I guess other people have preferences as well, and I don’t want to judge them based on their rate. 👍

:rotfl:

I wonder which is better? To say one rosary slowly, or two, faster, in the same amount of time? Is it Quantity vs. Quality? I’m sure you can say a rosary fast and mean it as much. It does seem to help, to say it faster, if your mind tends to wander.
Just another example: My Aunt and Uncle say the rosary together every night. She told me that now that he is getting older (80+), she had to speed it up, or he would fall asleep, waiting for his turn!!!

The first time I every heard a “speed rosary” was at awake for someone that died. I was a child at the time and had never been to a wake before. The priest had come and gone I guess as it was one of the mourners, a family member most likely, that lead the rosary. I never heard anything like it before. It was as if they were being timed to finish before a bell was going to ring or something. My sister and I thought it quite funny and did all we could to hide our amusement. Just when we finally got it all under control, they began again…This time in Italian! (Oh, that was even funnier to us!)

I remember thinking at the time how odd that anyone would say any prayer that fast. What would be the point of it? And now when I hear a really fast rosary being sped through, I still wonder what the rush is. There has to be a middle ground there somewhere don’t you think? Too slow is torturous though, BTW.

Is there some reason why the rosary should be said more slowly?
I have to say it slower for 2 reasons…I’m meditatingand also to be mindful. (I can’t meditate fast). I don’t say the Rosary out loud and I don’t say in church with others…because I don’t have the opportunity to.

I read somewhere, that St. Padre Pio said something like 15 COMPLETE Rosary’s a day. That is… 150 decades… 15 times a day! People attested to the fact that he always had his Rosary beads with him, in his pocket. And his hand was on them… praying!

I wonder how fast he prayed? Those beads must been flyin’! 😃 Because he was always busy… and hearing Confessions, etc. His ability to meditate on the Mystery’s must have been immense! 😛 He was probably constantly immersed in the Rosary. Awesome thought!

God bless.
He was also able to bilocate - he had many abilities that are denied to most of us. For myself, I pray best when I’m not also doing something else at the same time. Then again, I have never been good at any sort of multi-tasking.

YES, this bothers me too! That’s why I like the Rosary on EWTN with Mother Angelica and the Nuns. . . they pray with a nice, easy pace.
Oh my goodness, my MIL likes to say the rosary with them too. There must be something wrong with me, but when I turn it on and they are saying the rosary it makes me cringe! I don’t like to speed pray the rosary at all, but to me the nuns are so sing songy. I guess it’s all just personal preference. I find it hard to do group rosaries but I also realize that the Blessed Mother likes us to say the rosary in groups. Somehow I can’t concentrate as well when I am in a group.🤷

Forgive me, in advance, if someone has posted similar to what I will - time being tight, I can’t read all replies now.

But remember - that even saints (i.e. Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia) - once shortened their Rosary recitations (before Our Lady’s appearances at Fatima) - down to just the first few of the following words - calling out: “Hail, Mary” - and then on to the next bead instead of the entire prayer.
(Guess even future saints are not immune.)

Don’t you just hate it when you pray the rosary in a group, and one or more of the “leaders”, pray like they need to be someplace else in 5 minutes? I know I do.
YES!!!

i don’t know why but when i am in one of these groups… i just shut down and can’t seem to say a word along with them… just want to sit and listen and get into my own thoughts (which, hopefully are focused on the Lord… etc)…
