Spinoff: Can you have a devotion to Mary and not the Rosary?

Water’s OP (“Saints who don’t honor Mary”) got me thinking: Can one have a devotion to the Blessed Mother and not the Rosary? I’m just curious. . .

For me, the two are inseparable. The more I honor Our Lady the more I have to pray the Rosary, and the more my life just sings in it. But I can imagine that there are those who find the Rosary or its method of prayer tedious, difficult, etc.

So, do you have a devotion to the Blessed Mother and not Her Rosary? Again, I was just curious.

Yes - they are not one in the same.

You can also honor and respect Mary and all the Church teaches us about here and not have a personal devotion to her.

If we define “devotion” loosely, then anyone can have a devotion to Her. True devotion to Her grows not overnight; thus, one can have some sort of devotion to Her without having the real love for the Rosary, but over time, when his or her devotion becomes deeper and more trueful, he cannot say no to the Rosary; this does not imply one who prays the Rosary automatically has a true devotion.

There are also some sorts of false devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and here is the words from Saint Louis de Montfort:

1- Critical devotees: "…who deep down in their hearts have a vague sort of devotion to Mary. They criticise nearly all those forms of devotion to Her which simple and pious people use to honor their good Mother just because such practices do not appeal to them. They question all miracles and stories which testify to the mercy and trustworthy authors or taken from the chronicles of religious orders.

2- Scrupulous devotees: “they fear that by exalting Mary the are belittling Jesus… We should go directly to Jesus since He is our sole Mediator. There is some truth in what they say, but the inference they draw to prevent devotion our Lady is very insidious. It is a subtle snare of the evil one under the pretext of promoting a greater good”.

3- Superficial devotees: “are people whose entire devotion to our Lady consists in exterior practices. If they do not feel a warmed in their devotions, they think they are doing nothing; they become upset, and give up everything, or else do things only when they feel like it”

4- Presumptuous devotees: “are sinners who give full rein to their passions or their of the world, and who, under the fair name of Christian and servant of our Lady, conceal pride, avarice, lust, drunkenness, anger, swearing, slandering, injustice and other vices.”

5- Inconstant devotees: “are those whose devotion to our Lady is practiced in fits and starts. They start by embracing every devotion to our Lady. They join Her confraternities, but they do not faithfully observe the rules.”

6- Hypocritical ones: “These hide theirs sins and habits under the mantle of the Blessed Virgin”.

7-Self-interested devotees: “who turns to her only to win a court-case, to escape some danger …”

Yup, there’s tons out there and besides, the rosary isn’t solely Mary centered. In fact there are also devotions out there to a myriad of angels and saints.

I love Marian hymns and most of the Marian devotions I have learned about. I also love the rosary and consider it a valuable tool in strengthening one’s prayer life. I don’t pray it that often, because when I try to slow down enough to meditate on the mysteries, all sorts of things start coming into my mind and they drive me nuts if I don’t think them through. I’ll be meditating on the annunciation and I’ll find myself thinking about all sorts of things- whether it be the various phone calls I need to make, or what I’m going to have for dinner. Lately, I find it easier to pray the rosary in a group.

I have a very strong devotion to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. It was through her intercession that I entered the Church, and I am certain that she obtained an additional miracle for me after I began my devotion to her through the medal.

That said, I’m not NOT a fan of the Rosary, but I pray it only occasionally. I try to have the whole family say a decade of it together every day, but with 3 little ones and the 4th on the way, it’s often neglected.

So my vote is yes- you can have a devotion to the Mother but not the Rosary.
