Spirit is just fine matter (Mormons)

Who made Francis Sheed God’s authority on religion? Just because he said so, that don’t make it so. Everything has to be made of something. It can’t be made of nothing. Even “pure mind” (if such a thing existed) would have had to be made of something. The only thing that is made of nothing is nothing. The New Testament informs us that a spirit is something that can be seen (Matthew 14:26; Mark 6:49; Luke 24:37–39). How can it be seen if it is made of nothing? Joseph Smith did not say that spirits are made of the materials of this world. What he said was that they are made of something, not just nothing.

Oh I dunno, quantum physics has somethings coming out of nothing. Just because the limited human brain can’t understand something it doesn’t mean that something does not exist.

This is just another example of how mormons limit God to only that which is man.

Sheed is presenting Catholic doctrine as taught by the Catholic Church so the real authority is the Church’s magisterium which he is just explaining to lay people. There aren’t any Mormons who try to explain authoritative Mormon doctrine? Of course it is often difficult to determine if there is such a thing as authoritative Mormon doctrine.

As for your New Testament readings, they simply indicate the apostles thought they had seen a spirit. They were wrong – they saw the physical Christ. It’s an interesting question as to whether someone can actually see a spirit. I never have. So I’ll throw that out there as well – is it possible to “see” an immaterial spirit? I know I have never actually seen someone’s mind.

This topic points out a major difference between Mormons and Christians regarding the nature of God. For Mormons, God is part of the universe, not the creator of it. He exists within the universe. He had a beginning, and He had a creator! There was a time that He was not God. They believe that matter is eternal and existed alongside God and was not created by God. God simply took that matter and organized it into what we see today.

Mormons deny the possibility that God is much more than what they claim. They don’t understand that God exists apart from all of the universe. He is not a member of it, but is its creator. He is the only thing uncreated. The laws of physics do not apply to Him, as He is the creator of those laws. This simple fact alone means that nothing is impossible for Him. He is not bound by space or time, since He is the creator of those also. This kind of being we cannot comprehend with our limited human capacity, but we can know Him by having a relationship with Him, since He is our Father. He entered the human condition in the incarnation as Jesus Christ in order to be physically with us and endure the pain of death for our salvation.
