I know several Catholic teachers and saints have encouraged Spiritual Communion if you can’t make Holy Mass.

What about watching Mass live online and making a act of Spiritual Communion.

That seems ok to me.

What do you think?

Remote and spiritual communion/

Yes. If you can’t go to mass, of course. It won’t substitute for mass and won’t meet the Sunday obligation, but it can be a good experience. In fact, even when I can go to mass I will sometimes watch one on television or listen to one on the radio as well as actually going to mass. I get to hear a different homily, and experience the slight differences in the way masses are done. I have to believe that online would be a similar experience, and even better if there is a way to interact with others watching or attending the mass. Again, not a substitute for actually going to mass, but a great idea; especially as an act of spiritual communion when you can’t attend mass.

That sounds like doing two salutory things 🙂

Remember that the saints who recommended a spiritual communion did not even have radios to listen to Mass on, much less TVs, so you do not have to watch the Mass in order to make the Spiritual Communion.

Spiritual communion is not just the next best thing for those who can’t get to Mass. When practiced as a substitute, spiritual communion can provide the same grace as sacramental communion.

This is the teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Council of Trent, Pope Pius XII and many others.

Have we not all heard of the Baptism of desire?. A person sincerely desiring baptism receives the grace and presence of the Holy Spirit just as if there were a sacramental baptism. Spiritual communion is nothing more than a strong desire for communion. For one who can’t get to Mass, spiritual communion can operate the same way. For this to happen one must be in a state of grace.
