Hi all! I’ve been running ‘ Celebrations of the Word & Communion for Sundays & Weekday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest .’ for my family since Public Masses ended a few weeks ago here in Italy. At the point where the Eucharist would normally be, we make a Spiritual Communion (not unlike the ones someone would hear on the EWTN broadcasted Masses).

If I heard correctly, a Religious Sister who hosts a call-in show on an EWTN-affiliated station said on her program today that one could not partake in a Spiritual Communion under pain of Mortal Sin.

I must’ve misheard this, right? From what I understood, anyone could participate in a Spiritual Communion.

Thoughts appreciated, please & thank you!

Sounds like it. Of course you can pray an act of Spiritual Communion when in a state of mortal sin. It’s what you should do when you’re unable to receive, including if the reason you can’t receive is mortal sin.

You had to have misheard this. Anyone can make a spiritual communion. I would even go so far as to say, that an unbaptized person or a non-Christian could make a spiritual communion. It is exactly what anyone struggling to come out of mortal sin should do, and do often.

Thank you, Father. I’m not OP, but I’ve wondered about this for a long time, and your answer is a relief to me.

Thank you, Father! Listening back, I did mishear it. She said that you couldn’t return the graces if you were in a state of Mortal Sin and went on to say she couldn’t imagine a Priest who would turn down Confession. . . though here in Italy we’re still trying to figure out how to get to a Priest. :^(
