My husband and I were thinking about finding a spiritual director. What are some things we need to look for and what are some things that will be expected of us? We are both really excited about our faith and want to learn more.

[thread=6291]In this thread I address what is Spiritual Direction with a link to my webpage on Spiritual Direction for more info including some other links as well.[/thread].

You need to ask yourselves, “What do I want to get out of Spiritual Direction?” and share this with the director(s) you find.

Another thing to consider “Do you want joint direction or individual direction?”

What you want to find is someone who can listen objectively to your spiritual life and prayfully advise you on what to do. You want someone who understands the spirituality you are seeking.

Pray on who should be your spiritual director(s).

Examples of what you may be asked to do
  • You may be asked to journal everyday about your spiritual life. You may be asked to perform certain spiritual exercises or even take a retreat.
  • You may be asked to go to mass more often, pray certain prayers, or partake in Eucharist Adoration.
  • You may be asked to develop a new habit.
  • You may be asked to look at things in new ways.
  • You may be asked to fast occasionally.
  • You may be asked to read certain books or parts of books.
I hope this helps. Ask all the questions of me that you would like about Spiritual Direction.

Jenny,

In addition to the good advice you’ve already received, I would urge you to look for a spiritual director who is faithful to the magisterium.

If the spiritual director gives you any advice or direction that is contrary to Church doctrine or discipline, then you should look for another director. If their certification/training is not from a Catholic organization, they may not place sufficient emphasis on the Sacraments.

I mention this because I have met a handful of spiritual directors who have encouraged New Age practices(for example, enneagram and Sophia worship) and disobedience to Canon Law (for example, receiving Communion while in a state of mortal sin).
