I need to find a spiritual director now!!! Like I said before I’m not from the area, I just moved to Elmhurst, I don’t have a home parish, I don’t know where to go to find a spiritual director…heck I don’t even know what a spiritual director is :bigyikes: . I went to confession this weekend and the priest told me I needed a spiritual director so that I can start making some decisions regarding my situation. He suggested I call Benedictine University and ask if they have anyone who does that, is there any place closer to where I live to find a SD since the monks are out in Lisle, IL. Any help or suggestions would help, thanks.

Benedictine University would be a good place to start to find a Spiritual Director, but I would also check with Saint Procopius Abbey which is connected with the university. Since they have a Oblate program at the abbey, spiritual direction would most likely be available. It is only about 13 miles betweem Elmhurst and Lisle, so it is not that far to drive. Most people meet with their Spiritual Directors about once a month.

As the name Spiritual Director connotates, they can help you with problems spritually (like a habitual sin) or with dissernment of a path in life.
Getting back to the Benedictines, much of my early formation was under them at St. Vincent College/Seminary/Archabbey in Latrobe, PA. If I was a few years younger, I would consider becomming a monk there.

Hi Lexee~
I think that’s great that your confessor recommended a spiritual director to you…it shows that he was really listening carefully.
You might do a search here & browse around; there have been a lot of people who started here with (perhaps) many of the same questions: forums.catholic-questions.org/search.php?searchid=1456431
Best of luck to you. I’ll pray for your (future) spiritual director, that God leads you to the right one!

I suggest that you go to an Opus Dei priest for Spirutual Direction. Here is the site you can contact them at and they should be able to put you in touch with one in your area. opusdei.org/

Lexee,

Since Honoria mentioned it, you might want to know that Opus Dei has an evening of recollection (for women) in Elmhurst once a month. You could go to confession there to get a feel for what an Opus Dei priest would be like. PM me if you want details.

The Cenacle Sisters in Warrenville offer Spiritual Direction at the retreat house that is located in warrenville.

The monks at St. Vincent’s are amazing! 2 of them concelebrated our Nuptial Mass, and another one is our pastor here in Baltimore. Benedictines make wonderful spiritual directors, but then again, so do many priests.

I am looking for a spiritual director now that we have settled down for a while. I think I may have found one in a great priest (an ex-Jesuit) at a neighboring parish. It’s a toss-up between him and our own Benedictine pastor…

If you are looking for a home parish, you have two good ones with very good (and young) priests nearby:

Visitation in Elmhurst

Sacred Heart in Lombard

Opus Dei will get back to you right away. I emailed them today and got an email back within an hour.

That’s Catholic Action.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice and suggestions :blessyou: :yup: Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 👋 :dancing:

PACE and CTA both go from Elmhurst to the Loop. In the Loop, you can find St. Peter’s at 110 W. Madison. St. Peter’s is run by the Franciscans of the Province of the Sacred Heart. A part of their mission is outreach and Catholic continuity for Catholics who work in the Loop. But their biggest part of their mission is Reconciliation and Spiritual Direction: 9 hours a day spent on that!!! These friars are great and know their business!!!

Lexee 15,

I would highly recommend Fr. Tom Bothroyd who was a priest at a parish in Lisle, IL (not sure which one). He is excellent! He is a spiritual director for one of my relatives and also for another person I know.

The only thing is I do not know how to contact him. He left the parish in Lisle, IL and went to Marmian in Aurora. I would assume you can contact him there…

Also, I agree with Ham1 - Sacred Heart Parish in Lombard, IL has some very good young priests & I travel a long ways to make it my home parish. This would be another excellent route to take!
