Spiritual Director?

For me, it was something that was mentioned to me as something I could benefit from when I was meeting with my priest for a class I was preparing to teach. We have one on staff at our church, but his schedule and mine didn’t match. At that point I asked if he could recommend someone else. He did. Generally speaking, I would think all you would have to do is ask for a recommendation. It’s up to you to decided to pursue it, choose someone else, or try it and see where it goes. The one thing, don’t let fear stop you.

Thank you for this topic. While my circumstances are a little different from that of the OP–I’m a 49, not 17!–I too have been wondering how to find a spiritual director. I will be attending my first “come and see” at a convent in late January, and was thinking it was past time to find an SD. I will be sure to visit the website mentioned. I also sent an email to our diocese’s vocations director, asking him for suggestions. Depending on what he says I may call my parish office as well.

Best wishes and prayers to all currently discerning.

I also am looking for a spiritual director. My relationship with my priest is uncomfortable. He is not an approachable person, and although parish members who aren’t active in my parish like him, those of us who are active find him very difficult. He shakes hands after mass and is one of the first out the door. Since I’m a musician in the music ministry, he is often gone before I can get to the back of the church to reach him. Would my parish office have a list? I don’t even know where to begin. And do they charge money for meetings?

Thanks, god bless you all

I know where you are coming from. All the saints recommend a spiritual director to help you with discernment and to assess your spiritual progress, but finding one is so hard. I’ve been trying for months now. I actually approached one priest, and he said no, so it is hard to approach another priest. My parish priest has helped me, but he is not the right personality for me, and trying to schedule a meeting is too difficult. I don’t think it is their top priority. I’ve now decided to put it in the hands of Our Blessed Mother.

It is such an important and positive role for our spiritual growth. I don’t need to have a priest but would love to have a trained director to call. I’m not discerning the religious life but I think that our struggles are our struggles and we need more of them. I wouldn’t even mind going through training to become one myself except I need one first!

Maybe call your Diocesan office. Perhaps they can tell you where you may find one. I am looking specifically for a priest. I think I may have found one, but I am afraid to approach him for fear he will reject me. 😦

What worked for me was meeting with my priest and asking if he could help me find a spiritual director. I assumed he’d be too busy to be my spiritual director, but he offered his direction to me.

Well my priest is very hands off and avoids parishioners. Don’t be afraid to talk to him. I just know mine won’t have the answer. I guess I will call the diocese. Thanks.
