Spiritual Guides

Hi All,
I am a new member and am pleased to be a part of this divine circle of ‘friends’.
Coming from a VERY multi-cultural society I have often found myself wondering about various things. I am a Catholic and have my heart and soul totally rooted in Catholicism.

What I have been wondering about recently is what is the Catholic Church’s teachings on Spiritual Guides. I know that we believe in angels - but is there anything on various spiritual guides. IF they are one and the same thing then is it improper for a catholic to try and ‘contact’ her angels and if not, how.

Please if anyone out there can assist me with knoweldge on this topic I will be most grateful. I want to deepen my spiritual, but certainly not get involved with things I shouldn’t.

When you say Spiritual Guide, it seems as if you are talking about a being who would communicate with you to give you extraordinary knowledge.

See the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in a discussion of the first commandment:

2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

The safest course of action, I think, is prayer to one’s guardian angel and the other saints and angels. If, as a result of their intercession, you receive the guidance of the Holy Spirit, that’s great. Anything else borders dangerously on the sinful.

we do have spiritual guides. they are called the saints. we learn from the example of the lives, writings and spiritual direction.
