Styx-Show Me The Way is the first one that comes to mind. Sounds very prayerful.

Even the one verse from the Who’s “Who are you” - the one that Daltrey starts with “I know there’s a place you walked” seems almost like a prayer.

I don’t know if either band intended it this way but it is cool to hear this from bands you wouldn’t expect.

Any others?

Where is the Love? By the Black Eyed Peas. Also Tourniquet by Evanescence are both religious in nature.

Jesus Take The Wheel
You saw me crying in the chapel
Put your hand in the hand
Morning has broken

I don’t know of many songs like that, but another thing I find cool is when a Christian song ends up on secular radio. A few songs I have heard on secular radio by Christian artists are “Fix My Eyes” by For King and Country, “You Say” by Lauren Daigle, and “God Only Knows” by For King and Country. I also remember hearing a song by Switchfoot and a song by Plumb a while back on secular radio.

Skillet is pretty popular in the alternative/metal scene, they have been openly Christian from the start. U2 of course as well has many “Christian” sounding songs.

VAST’s first album has some very spiritual imagery in his songs.

Other bands like Imagine Dragons and The Killers have songs that are “Christian” sounding, but the members are LDS…so not quite mainstream Christian.

Monsters by Starset, and Against the Tide by Celldweller.

I also personally draw meaning from A Perfect Circle’s Judith, though it’s not the meaning the writer intended. He seems to hate God, whereas when I listen to the song I hear the story of his mother, a woman who didn’t allow her suffering to get between her and God. It really is a terribly blasphemous song though, so I don’t listen to it much anymore.

Nothing Else Matters by Metallica.

Nice!

I’ve always thought that “Let it Be” was prayerful, especially in reference to “Mother Mary.” I don’t know if the Marian imagery was intended by the Beatles, but I’ve always associated that song with the Blessed Mother.

Also, I should add Turn, Turn, Turn. The lyrics are taken directly from scripture. I find it to be an okay song. ‘60s American folk rock is hit or miss for me.

“Praying” by Kesha, which was a surprise when I heard it for the first time since this seemed to kinda contrast her songs in the past.
The core message was that this was her fighting addiction, abuse, and pretty much finding the strength to get back up again. It’s also her singing to a person that did her wrong and instead of throwing hate, she is hoping and praying he has a change of heart.
a lot on the perspective of the power of prayer.

Dream Theater has a lot:
  • Surrounded
  • Under a Glass Moon
  • Wait for Sleep
  • Any song from the Twelve-Step Suite (The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root of All Evil, Repentance, The Shattered Fortress)
  • In the Presence of Enemies Pt. I & Pt. II
  • The Spirit Carries On
  • The Ministry of Lost Souls
  • Surrender to Reason
  • The Astonishing (album)
  • I Walk Beside You
I’m kind of joking with The Astonishing, but there were moments that it seemed like naming a character “Faythe” (get it, “faith”) wasn’t coincidence. I am also being a bit loose with some of these. “In the Presence of Enemies” was inspired by a Korean comic, and “The Spirit Carries On” is referencing reincarnation when taken in context of the whole story of the album.

There are also occasional moments in some songs that seem to reference spiritual matters briefly (e.g. “A Nightmare to Remember”), and they have some songs about religious extremists that delve a bit into exploring personal faith (e.g. “In the Name of God” and “Sacrificed Sons”).

I don’t know why, but for some reason Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is” has always given me that kind of vibe. Especially if you read the lyrics. “I want to know what love is, I know you can show me.” I dunno, may just be me. Ha!

U2, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”
Imagine Dragons, “Demons”
David Crowder (version), “I Saw the Light”
fun, “Some Nights”
