At age 62, yes, I am thinking about retirement. I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this topic, but…I came across an advertisement in OSV for this group…

apartmentcommunity.org

Looks good to me, except for the weather. Anybody know a web site that lists this sort of retirement for Catholics, and hopefully some in a warmer place?😃

Dear Andruschak,

The type of retirement home posted is your link is mainly for those elderly who need medical/physical assistance to cope with everyday living. If your health requires you to have that kind of assistance, I’m sure the archdioceses in all parts of the country will have listings for these communities. You should contact them.

62 is NOT old, Andruschak - if your health is okay (not perfect but okay). Being a senior citizen myself and older than you 😉 , I enjoy the challenge of doing for myself. Retirement is fantastic! You can do whatever you want to do - at your own pace. You have a lot more time to spend with Our Lord and a lot more time to pray for others.

The financial aspects of committing to such communities can be binding, so you need to give it some real serious thought. Take into account your insurance need too. Unless you have a tremendous insurance plan that you can turn over, remember that at 62 you won’t necessarily be eligible for Medicare and the costs of independent insurance premiums can be a big burden.

Meanwhile, check out the community you linked and see what there residence requirements are. If for no other reason than to settle your mind and let you know where you stand.

we visited Belleville while investigating options for MIL, it is indeed a lovely place.

before investigating such places first decide what your needs are, apartment, probably less hassle than a house, or are you the type of person that really enjoys his house and yard. Assisted living? not in need of daily nursing care, but need someone else to clean, worry about the details, be on call because of a chronic condition. this decision is different for everyone there are no hard and fast rules, but at our age, pre-medicare, we have to use this time to gather all the facts, with prof. help if needed, about what our resources and needs will be at retirement. When you know that, then start looking at locations.

Most dioceses have lists of Catholic nursing homes, which is not where you need to be. Actually most assisted living complexes were first erected in the 70s - 80s by religious denominations. It does make a difference if the one you choose is a non-profit or for-profit, so find that out, too. Also the financial deal for entering is different, too, and that will have a bearing on your decision.

Just don’t wait so long that by the time a decision is forced on you by age, infirmity or ill health you no longer have the resources to do what is best, or the capacity to make the decision yourself.
