Hi,

My name is Bernarda, I lived 15 years in Chicago and now reside in San Juan, Puerto Rico since 1981. Since I was of young age I felt the need to know God and have gone through many trials, failures and suffering in my life. I have been going through depression for the last 5 years but I keep turning to God that He may sustain me in my faith and spiritual life. We were never taught how to communicate with God, how to give praise to the Lord and live an intimate life with Christ. Through the years I have felt the urge to read the Holy Scriptures and speak to the Lord as I would to a friend and I realize how many catholics are suffering through dryness, lack of knowledge and intimacy with God. I have learned that through great sufferings I should always confide no matter what and I learned from my older sister to repeat these words to the Lord: “Lord although I do not hear you I confide in you, Although I do not see you I confide in you, although I do not feel you I confide in you.” This has sustained me through great trials but, I feel great need to grow spiritually as I see many catholics also have this great need.

Holy priests bless the church that many may confide in the Lord enough to want to grow in His Love, His Word and in Spiritual life with Him. Amen.
 
That is a beautiful and poignant prayer. I’ll have to remember it for the times in which I am feeling spiritually dry. I am sorry about your ongoing depression, and I can understand where you are coming from. I will be praying for you and your spiritual growth! Continue to trust in the unseen God who has saved us from sin and death!

Bernarda - Have you seen a doctor regarding your depression? Sometimes a chemical imbalance can cause this to happen. I am not a doctor, but if you haven’t consulted one, perhaps you should.

I, like you, was never really taught how to communicate with God, or even how to pray, other than just saying the words. I think this is true for a lot of catholics. We just go through the motions. Recently, I went through a re-conversion. A lost sheep returning to the fold. Since that time, I have been reading the bible, watching EWTN, reading about the saints, going to mass and confession, and most importantly, receiving the body and blood of Christ. I now spend time learning my faith. I am reading the catechism of the catholic church trying to live my faith.

I have found that the rosary and meditation on the mysteries has brought me into intimacy with Jesus and His Mother. I have placed my trust in Him and try not to worry about those things that are not in my control. I offer my worries up to Him. You mentioned your life and the many sufferings you have experienced. Give them over to Jesus. Offer those sufferings up to Him and pray for perseverance. Know He loves you very much and is with you, even though you may not feel His presence.

And the young man said to him: Be of good courage, thy cure from God is at hand. - Tob. v 11-13
