I’m currently doing research for a book on Gabrielle Bossis, author of ‘He and I,’ who I discovered while writing ‘The Catholic Heart,’ and whose work has become a primary resource in my own spiritual life. The messages she received from Christ are breathtaking in the intimate love they convey, and they are meant for all the faithful, as He explicitly tells her.
I’ve verified that the locutions have indeed been authenticated and approved by the Church under the authority of the local archbishop, who convened an ecclesiastical commission to investigate the events and messages, and approved the compilation of the messages for publication. The publication of the ensuing book was entrusted to the Daughters of St. Paul, an international order of sisters whose apostolate is religious education and media.
Evelyn M. Brown, the translator of the English edition, was an educator from British Columbia is best known for writing the first authoritative biography of the Native American Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.
I write this to recommend ‘He and I’ to the many Catholics who seek to breathe in the intimate love of Christ in a fresh and almost unnerving way. I’ll end by quoting one message Gabrielle received in April of 1945:
" “Have you noticed how people talk among themselves, discussing all their personal affairs? They spend so much time this way and it does them so little good. Don’t you think that if they gave themselves to Me, their Friend, I should rejoice to have My place in their thoughts and I would know how to reward their confidence in abundance? Don’t you think that it would create a moment-to-moment intimacy between them and Me, and this would be a joy for them, because close to Me their lives would lose their tension.
You understand? It would be life together with Me; I am carrying the heavy end of things. So again I say: speak with me,myy little ones. Talk with me, our hearts will merge. Isn’t this the goal of my people? Isn’t that why you do not fear eternity? Then begin living this heart-oneness. Seize upon every opportunity. Find every pretext. You aren’t bold enough.”.
