This morning I went to a mass. Another person than the priest did the homily.

Since there was another mass in the afternoon that I liked to go to, I went there too, also to make sure I fulfilled my Sunday attendance!
Then during that mass I was so tired that I fell halfway asleep during the homily (held by the priest). I really could hardly keep my eyes open. I hope I have fulfilled my Sunday obligation as a Catholic. A priest told me once that falling asleep doesn’t mean you haven’t.

Oh yeah i wrote about this here and people I think told me to try to find out if there is a health problem.
Not enough sleep? 😉

p.s. But both masses were VERY GOOD!!!:):)🙂

The first mass that you attended fulfilled your Sunday obligation.

If you fall asleep a lot, yes you should get it checked out.

So you went to two full masses on Sunday, correct? You fulfilled your obligation by attending the first mass that you went to.

I do not know if someone has fulfilled their obligation if they intentionally fall asleep during Mass, but it doesn’t sound like you did that.

You should ask your priest this question if you are concerned about it. If you have a sleeping problem, it would be a good idea to get that checked out, too.

Having a layperson give the Homily doesn’t invalidate the Mass (although it makes it illicit). A Mass that is valid but illicit, as the first one was, still fulfils the Sunday obligation. You had no need to go to the second Mass.

As to the falling asleep - if you fell asleep because you were out partying too late the night before or something, that might be a problem, otherwise it’s something we have no control over, so neither wrong nor sinful.

Health problems? Well, that depends. Are you sleeping well for 8 hours a night but still feeling tired during the day and falling asleep? How is your diet - are you eating healthy or having too much junk, sugar and caffeine?

Did you receive the Blood of Christ at the first Mass, by any chance? 🙂

Funny you’re asking, ProVobis. For a different reason. I DIDN’T, because I wasn’t sure if I take the body AND the blood, and then communion again at the second mass, that will be too much… I think not, but I didn’t want to take the chance.

You’re permitted to receive up to twice per day, as long as you stay for the complete Mass for the second time. Receiving the Body and/or the Blood counts as receiving once.

I fall asleep everywhere all of the time when not physically active. Don’t worry about it unless it starts happening when you are physically active – like driving a car or operating dangerous machinery.
