Notice the conditional phrasing and the word “When”? I can explain some of this even if Cardinal Rinze can not: ignorance, which it turn is rooted in laziness.

In any case, what he is referring to is abuse, not proper service. I have never seen the abuses he mentions.

What do you mean re. “filling all of the positions”. I’ve been a Catholic for 68 yrs. & the only “positions” that I know about are that of the altar boys???

One of the old names for the server who carries the processional cross is “draconarius”.

The name likened the cross-bearer to the guy who rode ahead and carried the dragon banner of a Roman cavalry unit, who was called a “draconarius”.

Very similar to the images of Christ’s infantry banners in the old hymn “Vexilla Regis Prodeunt”.
