There have been recent topics about cartoon shows like the Simpsons and, well, I forget what others. But what do you think about SpongeBob Squarepants? Please only respond if you actually know something about the show. You can perhaps think and have an opinion without knowledge, but knowledge is a great aid to thinking.

Topics of interest -
  • Themes of the shows
  • Characters and their attitudes
  • Hidden and not-so-hidden messages contained in the plots
  • Redemption (how problems get solved) in the episodes
I’ll keep my opinion out for a while. But from seeing several shows and the movie I do have thoughts on the little dude and his adventures.

I watch Spongebob every morning before I go to school or work. I love that show. The characters are cute and silly, I like mindless programming when I wake up in the morning. They have jokes on there that only adults would get, but from what I have seen, nothing too racy. It’s not educational at all, but it’s still entertaining and creative. The themes are loony and off the wall. The most recent one I saw was when Spongebob and Patrick thought that Mr. Krabs was a robot. Problems usually get solved in fairily ethical ways.

I’m not sure about “hidden messages.” Others will probably enlighten you on that. But if you want to see real hidden messages watch old episodes of Heman. I saw one a few months ago and it was filled with homosexual innuedos, but when I was a kid I was not cognizant of it at all. Also, look at how violent the old looney tunes cartoons were.

Too much gay overtones, especially twixt SquareBob, fat tubba lard Partrick and Squidward. I also CANNOT Stand Sandy Cheeks, she’s way too self righteous, and always turns gas balloon Patrick against SpongBob.

My kids love it and it’s always on. It is very silly, but there’s a fair bit of adult humour hidden in there!

I dunno, I’m fairly chilled out about stuff like this (I think Soap Operas are the spawn of the devil though) but if there’s some info you have I would like to hear it!

Spongebob is a direct descendant of Beelzebub. He creeps me out – kinda in the same way clowns do (harmless but excessively weird).

Spongebob is kinda goofy, but when it is on, I find myself staring and probably drooling on myself because it is so mindlessly entertaining.

As I speak, Spongebob is on the tv. The show is silly, REAL SILLY but fun.

I kinda even like the show. Spongebob actually sends a pretty good message to my kids. After all, he does not lie-cheat-steal or give up on a goal. He is loyal and trustworthy with his friends. He has a great work ethic, prides (in a good way) his on time percentage/no days missed.

Sandy, on the other hand, needs to head back to Texas.

Ya gotta have ol Squidy to offset the altra good Spongebob.

But my favorite is Patrick…I just gotta love someone so totally clueless. But at least HE HAS A DRIVERS (urr boating) LICENSE. Hmmm I think I spelt that wrong. 😃

Whoopee!!!

Well good, there seems to be a fair concensus that the episodes are funny. I don’t get to watch it much, I don’t have cable or satellite at my house and am rarely in town to see it. But the episodes I have watched pretty well set me up good for the movie.

Maybe the writers have somekindof (:hmmm:) hidden message on their mind. Probably not, but who knows!!
Comparatively speaking, I’m glad Spongebob is there to take attention off of South Park and whatever other hideous excuses for entertainment are out there in the cartoon world! I remember watching South Park in college ( and Beavis/Butthead before that) and I would have spent my time better taking a hot lava bath! Their irreverant and profane ways are like needles pricking the ears of the pious!

But SpongeBob, hey>> you gotta give it to him. He tries to be a good neighbor to Squidworth, is loyal to his best friend, and in the movie he showed superior zeal to protect the reputation and business of his boss. And even that part where they were drunk, c’mon, they got drunk on ice cream!! Brilliant!!

The show is funny, witty, and enjoyable for children and adults, and so far seems to not be leaving sinful impressions on watchers. YAY!! That doesn’t make it good, but that’s basically what I think.

**I’m a gramma, and have to admit that I love Sponge Bob…It’s funny enough for the kids, but has some adult overtones (remember Yogi Bear and The Flintstones?). **

It is my opinion that you can look too deeply into things like cartoons, and see whatever you want to see…Lighten up, guys!

I hope people here don’t take me too seriously.

Only as serious as we take Spongebob!!😉

No, actually, I was hoping you were kidding, but didn’t know.

CatholicHeart, – That’s great that you enjoy watching cartoons. Whenever I get a movie and it merely has cartoon previews, my mom is like “This isn’t a cartoon is it, oh Robert, I hope not!”

I hope there are still enjoyable, non-offensive and preferably positive cartoons to watch if I live past 50 or so. That was just a random arbitrary picking of an age.
