Do we need to give material gifts for b’day/christmas if we want to be a sponsor? And does the sponsor have to be older?

Last month, I had to arrange a baptism for a patient in hospital. He was hospitalised, so we did a conditional (?) baptism in hospital. My parish priest rejected me to be a sponsor because I was too young (21yo, student) and he’s in his 60s.

So the patient’s brother was chosen instead, but then I was asked to arrange RCIA session for him when he get well (Go to his house for the session).

Another point, the priest also mentioned that to be a sponsor one has to buy gifts (Christmas, b’day). Is this necessary?

I just want to ensure as I might be a sponsor next year. It’ll be great if someone could tell me the criteria to be a sponsor and what a sponsor must do. 🙂
Thanks.

No, the gift of your prayers is all that is required. However if you want you can. There is no age “reference” (being older or the same) for a Sponsor or Godparent. Only you must be at least 16 and Confirmed, practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.

Ah! Thanks a lot. 🙂

I’m 21 and about to me a godmother and was a Confirmation sponsor at age nineteen. As long as you can be a good example and answer their questions and support them, I’d say you’re golden…with or without the gifts. The gift of your spirit is probably enough, but, personally, I did buy gifts for both because I was so psyched about the opportunity I thought each was giving me.

I hope a couple of those gifts were a rosary and a booklet of instructions?🙂

(I should find out this Sunday who my sponser is. I already have rosaries and booklets:D )

we suggest to all sponsors and parents in our Confirmation program that the ideal gift is a Daily Roman Missal “the last prayerbook you will ever need.” They already receive a study bible, rosary, scapular, apologetics guide and CCD during their preparation.

Where can I pick up that DAILY ROMAN MISSAL? Is there just one edition or several?
