Hi everyone.

After another awful week of depression I seem to be at my post-mass high.

I approached the Priest about joining the church and although I understand that the RCIA may be in full swing in September, he mentioned getting a sponsor?

What does he mean by this, can anyone tell me?

Your sponsor sponsors your baptism and confirmation. Sponsors are known as “godparents” informally, typically when children are being baptized.

You can talk to the RCIA coordinator. Sometimes a person will already have a particular person in mind as a sponsor, and sometimes the parish will assist in matching you with someone.

And there is plenty of time to get a sponsor.

Welcome! I recently finished RCiA 3/30/2013 and LOVED the classes. I searched a lot on the internet. There is ton’s of information out there on RCIA, the classes, timelines, teachings, and of course sponsors.
Pick someone you know, whom will support you all the way through. Someone whom will come to Mass with you, leave with you when you go to Breaking Open the Word. (they will attend another Mass of which they can stay for communion also).
Someone you can go to with questions and will assist you in your journey. Your sponsor should be Catholic in strong in their faith, and not a relative. They should be committed to attending all classes with you.
I, actually had my husband (whom could not be my “sponsor”, but attended all classes, including Breaking Open the Word), and 2 co-workers. I couldn’t decide which, they are/were both fantastic, so I invited both!
My husband would often tease, it took an army! Ha!
So, my husband, my 2 co-workers, and myself showed for event and class.
Welcome, and if you have no one in mind right now, that’s ok. This is a great time for searching, studying. I googled anything I could find about the process. Our classes went exactly according to everything I found.
Often the RCIA leaders will have several people from the parish supporting the program attend the classes and they will team you up with someone.
Enjoy!!

Yes, you need a sponsor. Your sponsor stands up for you at each of the Rites, most especially at your Confirmation.

Your sponsor is like a friend too, with you on your journey.

I went through the RCIA before the WorldWideWeb was invented! In 1991.

(The internet has been around since the 60s though).

Good luck finding a good sponsor.

If you don’t know anyone who could be your sponsor, don’t worry. I’m sure your parish will be able to sort that out and find someone. Many people who convert have no Catholic family or friends who could fulfil that role, and the church helps them find a person.

Thanks everyone, given my health I’m just taking it one day at a time and am off to the Scottish Cup Final today.

I appreciate everyone’s help.

God bless,

Andrew
