What is the role of a Sponsor, for a person entering RCIA?

RCIA is generally discussed in the Evangelization forum.

A sponsor serves as a spiritual friend and mentor, someone who will support the candidate or catechumen through the RCIA process and show what it means to be a faithful Catholic. The sponsor also represents the community and attests to the readiness of the person to receive the sacraments when the time comes.
