I just arrived back from a trip in Italy. I was able to see Venice, Florence, and Rome. While there were many beautiful and historic Churches the scene was largely depressing:

What has happened to Italy???

If it weren’t for the tourists walking in and out of those churches, they would be empty! On Sunday there seemed to be very few people going to Mass and the ones that did left very, very early and hardly anyone tithed… Not that I was really keep an eye on everyone, I just happened to sit in the extreme back and saw that the collection basket was skipping entire sections of the pews because no one was giving an offering.

On top of this I met a few Italians who seemed to have a distaste for Catholicism. I don’t see how there is a renewal of Catholicism these days…

Europe definitely has its problems, but from what I’ve been told the Church is flourishing in other areas such as Africa and India.

Just a quick note, Protestants still follow the OT tithing rule that Jesus abandoned. I guess they need all that money to support the families of the preachers? Catholics follow Jesus and Jesus taught us to “almsgive.”

Otherwize you made some great observations.
