I read in a copy of The Maryfaithful something about bishops in Canada allowing square hosts. Now, this article was back in the 1980’s. However, I am just curious if anyone out there has a parish that uses square hosts instead of round ones.

In my parish the square hosts are for ciliacs- people with a gluten intolerance. Don’t know if that helps.

There is no rule on the shape of the host. They can be square as well as round. Just as long as the other requirements are meant.I have never seen a square host similiar to the stamped out round ones we usually get. I have been in a parish in Virginia where the bread was much more “breadlike”. Not leavened but chunky and chewy.

What are they made of?

Peace

Tim
Hmm, don’t know.
Presumably the validity requirements are met, otherwise that could be very bad.
I have just started having this at our evening mass, so I will enquire what’s going on.
I believe some gluten is required, but not a lot?

We sometimes have a huge Host for Sunday, that breaks into neat, precise triangles. I believe some of the Eastern Rites “cube”. Other eastern Rites intinct, creating quite a damp Blessed Sacrament. And if the priest needs extras, he can break up Hosts. So, I think it’s a matter of content of the Host and not the shape.

I asked this question a while back and got some interestnig answers.

It does not seem that there are any rubrics that anyone could find governing the shape of the Host (before the Fracturing).

However, it seems that round is generally used because it has no corners that may break off, thus decreasing the chance that the Body of Jesus is accidently defiled.

I’ve never heard of square hosts before… any parish that I’ve ever been to has used round.
