Squeezing in a Rosary for a busy mother

Some thoughts for how to squeeze in that daily Rosary for busy mothers.

I joined the Confraternity of the Rosary, which obligates me to TRY to say the 15 mysteries in one week. Some days I just cannot get that Rosary prayed.

I started breaking up my Rosary. While lying in bed or at sitting down to breakfast, I pray the beginning of the Rosary.

When I sit down to lunch I pray the first mystery. If I have a quiet few minutes to pray that second mystery, I do that.

Praying in front of a hot meal waiting to be eaten is also willpower training and a patience builder. This is also an opportunity when my young children a preoccupied with eating and are relatively quiet. They get to listen to the Rosary being prayed.

I don’t worry about the rest of the mysteries until the next day they are prayed. For instance, on Monday, I pray the beginning of the Rosary, and the first two Joyous mysteries. I don’t pray the 3rd, 4th, and 5th mysteries until Thursday when the Joyous mysteries are prayed again.

In this way, the entire 15 decades of the Rosary are prayed in one week, and my obligation to the Confraternity has been fulfilled. (You don’t fall into sin by not fulfilling the obligation.)

My sister’s kids look forward to watching the rosary on EWTN. Try that. In our area we are also blessed to be able to have EWTN on the radio as well with the rosary at a different time. Sounds like it is the voice of Fr. Groeschel.

Breaking things down into do-able steps is one of the best time management skills there is. Thank you for sharing this approach to saying your Rosary. build in quality time with the kids and pray together, even one decade, every night before bedtime. Of all the practices of my formerly Catholic family, the one I believe that has done the most to bring us back to where we should be is the memory of those family rosaries in our younger days.
 
Say it together with your family, that way it gets said and everyone is the recipient of grace! I know it won’t always be the most recollected of prayers, but it really is important to pray together.
 
You can get it on tape or CD and play it in the car. My mom is a really busy lady and has been praying the Rosary daily for years. When we were little we would pray it in the car with her on our way back from school etc. At school, I sometimes would walk to class listening to it on cd with or without the Rosary in my hand in my pocket. Also, you can sit as a family and pray it (after dinner?) “A family that prays united remains united” 🙂

We do not have TV and there is a Catholic station on the radio, but I am out of a radio right now. 😦

My husband is non-Catholic and isn’t interested in praying a decade of the Rosary. We do pray an Our Father and a Hail Mary together at bedtime each night. I would prefer the children hear me pray a decade to our Blessed Lord and his Mother devoutly than have it raced through at bedtime just to scurry them off to bed.

I have told my 4yrold that each time we pray a devout Our Father, we give Jesus a red rose. Each time we pray a devout Hail Mary, we give Mother Mary a white rose, and 10 makes a crown for her. He loves this imagery and when I pray at the table before a meal, he says, “You just gave Jesus a red rose, Mama.”
 
Oh, one more thing, we would often pray in the car without cd/tape too. Mom would have us counting (with Rosary if available) while she drove. Mom also has a silver ring that is a decade rosary. She uses it to pray while in line at the supermarket, waiting at a Dr. appointment, giving a test (she’s a teacher) or whenever she see’s she will be free for a while. Those rings are very pretty and serve as jewelery too (one of hers was ten small silver roses).

I just got it on tape this weekend and begin praying in the car Monday morning. It’s only the fifteen mysteries, though, so i don’t know what I should do Thursday about the new Mysteries of Light. Also, I began thinking about how focused am I when I say it while I’m trying to drive? Does that diminish it in any way?

i also listen to it in the car. when DS gets older we will start doing it together

THanks for the thread. I too struggle with trying to fit prayer into my daily life. I would like to pray the Rosary on occasion.
My question is do you have to meditate on the mystery? I could say a decade but not having memorized the mysteries I wouldn’t know what to contemplate. I could say a decade for a prayer request or petition though.

Ideally, you could do it in a monument/shrine of the Virgin or in front the Blessed Sacrament with full concentration, but if that is not feasible, if you can multitask, doing it on the road is an option. If you can talk with your kids, or think about other things without impairing your driving, the you can prolly pray to the Virgin Mary too! 🙂
