Would it constitute a sin to asisst at and recieve communion at Masses celebrated by a priest from the SSPX?

No…but then again I exclusively attend such a chapel…I have read a ton of material about the SPPX and I am not convinced they are doing anything to be concerned about.

Now some folks will definitely disagree with me about this…

Pax tecum!

Yes, “some folks” like the last two popes. Only those “folks”. Disobedience to the Vicar of Christ really is nothing to be concerned about.

And yes, it would be a sin to assist at an SSPX Mass as well as to take Communion from an SSPX priest unless you are unable to get to an approved Mass or if it is an emergency. See Ecclesia Dei.

It is acceptable to attend an SSPX mass, providing your intention is not to join the schismatic attitude of the society.

It is not advisable, at least, to receive Holy Communion at such a Mass, as their communion with Rome is doubtful.

Here’s the official answer from Rome:
Points 1 and 3 in our letter of 27 September 2002 to this correspondent are accurately reported. **His first question was “Can I fulfill my Sunday obligation by attending a Pius X Mass” and our response was:

“1. In the strict sense you may fulfill your Sunday obligation by attending a Mass celebrated by a priest of the Society of St. Pius X.”**

His second question was “Is it a sin for me to attend a Pius X Mass” and we responded stating:

“2. We have already told you that we cannot recommend your attendance at such a Mass and have explained the reason why. If your primary reason for attending were to manifest your desire to separate yourself from communion with the Roman Pontiff and those in communion with him, it would be a sin.** If your intention is simply to participate in a Mass according to the 1962 Missal for the sake of devotion, this would not be a sin**.”
So, according to Rom, if your primary reason for attending was to separate youself from comminion with the Roman Pontiff, it would be wrong. However, "if you intention is simply to participate in a Mass according to the 1962 Missal for the sake of devotion, this would not be a sin.

Some people on this message board may not agree with the answer from Rom. That just shows that they claim to know better than the Church. Don’t listen to them.

If you want to attend a reverent beautiful and valid Mass, with a solid sermon containing sound Catholic dogma, you are perfectly free to attend an SSPX mass. **(Edited)

Rome is correct.

Hi USMC,

Here’s the official answer from Rome:

Could you please tell me where and when this was published? Thank you.

Exactly. It is also permissible to drop a few bucks in the basket too.

Hi USMC,

Thanks for the reference. I would however remind ourselves of the canons of the church, which were not repealed by this communication :
Can. 844 §1 Catholic ministers may lawfully administer the sacraments only to catholic members of Christ’s faithful, who equally may lawfully receive them only from catholic ministers, except as provided in §§2, 3 and 4 of this canon and in can. 861 §2.

§2 Whenever necessity requires or a **genuine spiritual advantage commends it, **and provided the danger of error or indifferentism is avoided, Christ’s faithful for whom it is physically or morally impossible to approach a catholic minister, may lawfully receive the sacraments of penance, the Eucharist and anointing of the sick from non-catholic ministers in whose Churches these sacraments are valid.
In a word, to go to a schismatic mass is not something lightly to be done and certainly not for reasons of curiosity or for the thrill of beng different.

Can someone tell me what’s so wrong with the SSPX? Are they a form a sedevacantists or what? I’m confused why so many people are anti-SSPX…Thanks. 🙂

Hi Valiant__,

The SSPX are Catholics who are in a state of disobedience to the Church. Praying for them is the attitude we should have.

Perhaps those Catholics who are violently anti-SSPX are really anti-traditionalists, who also oppose the so-called Tridentine Mass. This mass, the 1962 Missal Mass, is approved by the Church, and deserves respect, as well as those Catholics who attend it.

It is very pardonable to go to an sspx weekday mass, not instead of regular parish mass, to satisfy curiosity as to what all the fuss is about.

The danger is when attendance could be interpreted as adhering to the schism. If you are well known as a liberal trendy Catholic who is not at all in sympathy with SSPX, but maybe wants to keep lines of communication with them, there wouldn’t be a problem. If your opinions are not well known, or if your attendance might encourage others to join SSPX, it is most unadvisable to attend.

Thanks to all who have participated in this discussion.
