Would it constitute a sin to asisst at and recieve communion at Masses celebrated by a priest from the SSPX?
Pax tecum! No…but then again I exclusively attend such a chapel…I have read a ton of material about the SPPX and I am not convinced they are doing anything to be concerned about.
Now some folks will definitely disagree with me about this…![]()
Here’s the official answer from Rome:Would it constitute a sin to asisst at and recieve communion at Masses celebrated by a priest from the SSPX?
So, according to Rom, if your primary reason for attending was to separate youself from comminion with the Roman Pontiff, it would be wrong. However, "if you intention is simply to participate in a Mass according to the 1962 Missal for the sake of devotion, this would not be a sin.Points 1 and 3 in our letter of 27 September 2002 to this correspondent are accurately reported. **His first question was “Can I fulfill my Sunday obligation by attending a Pius X Mass” and our response was:
“1. In the strict sense you may fulfill your Sunday obligation by attending a Mass celebrated by a priest of the Society of St. Pius X.”**
His second question was “Is it a sin for me to attend a Pius X Mass” and we responded stating:
“2. We have already told you that we cannot recommend your attendance at such a Mass and have explained the reason why. If your primary reason for attending were to manifest your desire to separate yourself from communion with the Roman Pontiff and those in communion with him, it would be a sin.** If your intention is simply to participate in a Mass according to the 1962 Missal for the sake of devotion, this would not be a sin**.”
And yes, it would be a sin to assist at an SSPX Mass as well as to take Communion from an SSPX priest unless you are unable to get to an approved Mass or if it is an emergency.
Rome is correct."if you intention is simply to participate in a Mass according to the 1962 Missal for the sake of devotion, this would not be a sin.
It was issued by the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei” on January 18, 2003 by Msgr Perl, and puclished several places. You cn find it on the Una Voce website by following this link unavoce.org/articles/2003/perl-011803.htmHi USMC,
Here’s the official answer from Rome:

Exactly. It is also permissible to drop a few bucks in the basket too. Here’s the official answer from Rome:

Some people on this message board may not agree with the answer from Rom. That just shows that they claim to know better than the Church. Don’t listen to them.
If you want to attend a reverent beautiful and valid Mass, with a solid sermon containing sound Catholic dogma, you are perfectly free to attend an SSPX mass. (Edited)
In a word, to go to a schismatic mass is not something lightly to be done and certainly not for reasons of curiosity or for the thrill of beng different.Can. 844 §1 Catholic ministers may lawfully administer the sacraments only to catholic members of Christ’s faithful, who equally may lawfully receive them only from catholic ministers, except as provided in §§2, 3 and 4 of this canon and in can. 861 §2.
§2 Whenever necessity requires or a **genuine spiritual advantage commends it, **and provided the danger of error or indifferentism is avoided, Christ’s faithful for whom it is physically or morally impossible to approach a catholic minister, may lawfully receive the sacraments of penance, the Eucharist and anointing of the sick from non-catholic ministers in whose Churches these sacraments are valid.
It is very pardonable to go to an sspx weekday mass, not instead of regular parish mass, to satisfy curiosity as to what all the fuss is about.Perl
Thanks for the reference. I would however remind ourselves of the canons of the church, which were not repealed by this communication :
