Perhaps a thread similar to this exists, but I’m not aware of it. Anyways, this is very narrow in scope.

I have a desire to purchase the book “The Glories of Mary” by Bishop Alphonse de Ligouri. It’s about 400 pages, and, myself, not being that interested in delving deep into intricacies of Mariology, I would like to at least get a feel for the book, and check some supposed quotes that are, personally, hard for me to believe are actually contained in the book. My pastor gave me a bookled (25 p.) that addresses Catholic doctrines, and of course, there are a few pages on Mary. Here are 2 quotes from Ligouri’s book:

“And she is truly a mediatress of peace between sinners and God. Sinners receive pardon by…Mary alone” (p. 82,83)

“The whole Trinity, O Mary, gave thee a name…above every name, that at Thy name, every knee should bow, of things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth” (p. 260)

This guy has like 10 quotes from the book. Alas, I am suspicious of those sneaky “…”'s that are incorporated into the quotes! Aren’t you?

So, I have a desire to purchase the book ($13) from Amazon (I doubt my local Christian Bookstore will have many copies of it, they probably stay sold out due to it’s popularity here in the “Bible Belt”:)) and check on those quotes. But, if anyone cares to comment upon the book, or it’s author, or the quotes, please do so. I’m sure other Protestants have heard, or will hear the same thing, and it would be helpful to have an explanation or rebuttal in mind.

“And she is truly a mediatress of peace between sinners and God. Sinners receive pardon by…Mary alone” (p. 82,83)
What a horrible quotation. Notice the … And now notice that that ‘whole sentence’ took up 2 pages. Obviously if the author was trying to say Sinners receive pardon by Mary alone, then there wouldnt be the dots. It looks like te people who made the booklet are blatantly using deception to prove that we worship mary.
“The whole Trinity, O Mary, gave thee a name…above every name, that at Thy name, every knee should bow, of things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth”
Again, notice the “…” It is deception, pure and simple. If you think that this is true go, buy the book yourself. This is disgusting.

Yes.

Alphonsus de Liguori, the founder of the Redemptorist order, is a good writer and is perfectly orthodox. Just keep in mind that he comws from a more devout age with a much more pronounced Marian spirituality. Anyone used to the “spare” ICEL language current in modern Catholic Churches will find his idiom quite different from ours.

This section is speaking about her Intercession for us.

“The whole Trinity, O Mary, gave thee a name…above every name, that at Thy name, every knee should bow, of things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth” (p. 260)

Mary received her name from God, not from her parents. The quote actually begins “The whole Trinity, O Mary, gave thee a name AFTER THAT OF THY SON above every name,…”

It is a great book, I recomend his work on the Holy Eucharist.

Many people have problems with St. Alphonso Liguori’s sentiments. St John Cardinal Newman, writing in his *, said basically that Liguori was too over the top for him.

I have read “The Glories of Mary” and, while it is at home and I am not and therefore cannot comment on the quotes posted, I feel a need to reply. I found Liquori’s book to be a more compelling and equally sound defense of Mary’s role as Mediatrix between man and God as St. Louis Marie de Montfort’s “True Devotion to Mary.” Mary is NOT our Savior. That role is Christ’s alone. God’s choice (His Will be done) of Mary as the channel through whom Christ was given to us, however, makes her the ideal channel through whom we return to Him, again, by the choice of God.
