In his 50 maxims, one of them is to recommend yourself to those person who love Jesus Christ.

What does this mean in today’s terms?

Translated in modern American English, probably something like “seek out people who share your faith to associate with” or even more simply “don’t hang around with bad influences.”
 
I always took it as entrusting yourself to their care, like say, asking them to pray for you. Roland’s post seems to make sense too.
