I and a couple of non-Catholic friends will be in St. Augustine soon. I will be attending Mass, and they have volunteered to come along. I want to take them to a “nice” parish, and I was looking at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. We will probably have to make the evening 6:00 pm Mass.

However, my worst nightmare is bringing my two non-Catholic friends to a Mass, we’re sitting there reverently, and the next thing you know they are breaking out the guitars and tamberines. That is why I’m posting to get any advice anyone may have to give on Sunday evening Mass in the vicinity of St. Augustine, particularly at the CB.

The Cathedral Basilica is in my Diocese but I have never been to Mass there. Here is their website, I suggest you click on the contact us link on the left side of the homepage and phone the Secretary with your questions. The address is www.thefirstparish.org/ . St. Augustine is my favorite place in the world (my second fav is Charleston, S.C.) and it’s only 30 minutes away from my home. Be sure to grab a slice of Pie (I’m talking Pizza;) ) at Pizzalley’s on St. George Street. It’s awesome (I have to have roasted Garlic on mine!). St. George Street starts right there at the Cathedral. If you have any questions about St. Augustine, I’ll be happy to help out.🙂 When are you going to be there?

We’ll be there this coming Sunday evening, Monday, Tuesday at least.

Any other recommendations? We’re taking notes.

I assume that you will be visiting the Shrine? The beginning of the Catholic Church on American soil.

I came across some info about Mass at the Cathedral. The Saturday 5 p.m. Mass an organ is used as well as the Sunday Mass at 11 a.m. I heard that the Sunday 6 p.m. Mass was primarily college students from Flagler College which is only a block away. Most likely there is Guitars at that one. I believe you can take a tour of the Cathedral, which would be nice. I suggest as Bro Rich did that you visit the Mission of Nombre de Dios Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche (Mothers Milk). Here is the website: www.missionandshrine.org/ . It is the sight of the first Mass in the United States (1565). The Shrine & grounds are peaceful & beautiful. There is a wonderful gift shop there that I frequent as well.🙂

If you like fried Shrimp, O’Steen’s has the best. It’s not expensive and the building is not fancy but they have been around for years & they have a reputation for their Shrimp. It’s across the Bridge of Lions not too far down on the right. If my memory serves me, it is closed on Monday’s so if you are interested, give them a call for hours of operation. The beach is always a must see, the Castillo de San Marcos or called “The Fort” by us locals is an attraction not far from the Cathedral. Don’t forget to walk down St. George Street starting at the Cathedral. Pizzalley’s is not far down on the right (pronounced Pizz-alley’s) for great Pizza. There is a fantastic Gelato/eatery just past Sunburst Crystal shop on the right, too. Their Gelato is wonderful, sorry I can’t think of the name of the shop:blush: . The oldest School House is farther down St. George Street on the left (these are directions if you are coming from the Cathedral, keep in mind). Also, the Cathedral offers tours that you might want to check out. I’ll be there on Saturday with my Daughter & my two sisters for a girls day out/lunch fun day. We are going to a restaurant called Mango-Mangos at the beach. They have good Grouper sandwiches and Yucca Fries with a creamy coconut sauce for dipping!!:bounce: YUM! We always go to Sunburst Crystal shop on St. George Street for some bling!🙂

I did. It was fantastic, although one of our group bailed on us at the last second, so it was just two of us. I did attend Mass at the Cathedral-Basilica with my non-Catholic friend. Went to the fort and the beach, of course. Ate at Pizzalley’s according to the tip, which was awesome. Also had lunch at Acapulco’s across from the fort, which was decent but overpriced. Went to the Greek Orthodox St. Photios Shrine and met a lady who works the counter there named Gina, a former Catholic who converted to the OC. My friend went to the Lighthouse, but my feet were too tired to go up the stairs. Spent some time on the beach swimming and watching dolphins. We played some mini golf, and that was about it. Our trip was a tad shorter than we had anticipated, but we had a blast. I will definitely return.

Oh, and there were no guitars at Mass, although our schedule got changed at the last minute, and for the life of me I can’t even remember if we attended the evening Mass due to irregular driving and sleeping… I’m fairly sure we did.

So glad you enjoyed your visit & plan to return! Cool! No Guitars at the Mass you went to:extrahappy: ! I have never been to Acupulco’s but my Daughter has been & she said the same thing, it was over priced. I have never been to the Greek Orthodox Shrine,it seems to be closed whenever I think to stop in:shrug: . I said I was going to climb the Lighthouse steps when I reached a milestone birthday, but that was two years ago:whistle: (I have a height phobia:blush: ). I am so happy that you went to Pizzalley’s for Pizza! I tell everyone about it, because it’s so good! Let me know when you will be coming back, I’ll think of some more suggestions of things to see.🙂

I’ll be visiting there in a few weeks. I plan to visit the Fort, the Mission, the Lightner Museum, the Lighthouse, Zorayda Castle, and the Cathedral. I am also reading about the Ghostly Encouters Tour. Anyone ever go on the tour before?
