I’m not sure whether this post belongs here on or in “Moral Theology”, but does anyone know of an online source that contains the sermons and Spiritual writings of St. Augustine of Hippo?

I already have the “Confessions” and will eventually purchace, "City of God; however, at the present time, I’m particularly interested in his Sermons (in their full context), Apologia and other Spiritual writings.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and God Bless!

St. Augustine is my favorite! He is my patron saint! New Advent has much of his writings, it comes from the 38 volume set of the Church Fathers edited by Philip Schaff from the Hendrickson Publishers. I have the set, and it is very good, though it is not a Catholic work. As for St. Augustine’s writings in that set, it does miss some of his letters such as Letter 199 where Augustine writes about the End Times, which I have in my set of “The Fathers of the Church” series from the “Catholic University of America” publishers.

The only problem with the New Advent site with the writings of the Fathers is that it does not index the Scripture citations when the Fathers site the Bible, so you don’t know where in the Bible that they quoted from unless you recognize it from memory. But other than that it does provide you with the writings.

St. Augustine is my favorite!
St Augustine’s writings were partially responsible for bringing me out of (Greek) Orthodoxy to Catholicism. There were other things but Augustine surely resonated.

The ccel.org is a good site to go to for ECF. I’ve been reading Augustin lately and am really blown away with his reasoning. Right now i’m reading his homilies on John ch6.

If you read the Office of the Readings, you will get a lot of St. Augustine. His writings are used more frequently than any other Doctor of the Church.

Dear Northwind,

I think most of us from the Apologetics forum are flocking over to read Augustine’s sermons on John 6. 😉

God Bless

Could someone please help me? I am looking for the easiest to read version of St Augustine’s Confession.

How quickly do you need it? My son had to purchase the most recent edition last year, for college; but I don’t know the ISBN at this time.

When I see him, tomorrow, I’ll get this ISBN and post it for you.

God Bless!

The most readable publication of the Fathers comes from the Catholic University of America Press. I have the very large set, and it is the best on the market! Here is a link to order the Confessions. cuapress.cua.edu/BOOKS/viewbook.cfm?Book=F021

Here is the link to their whole Patristic catalogue. cuapress.cua.edu/BOOKS/catalog/author/a.cfm

I also have the 38 volume set of the Fathers edited by Phillip Schaff, which is good, but it is not smooth reading, and also tends to be anti-catholic in the footnotes. But if you want an excellent Catholic translation then I recommend the CUA that I gave the links to!

Hi Everyone and thank you for your generous responses.

I went to: newcitypress.com/productslist.aspx?CategoryID=1&selection=1, and found two volumes of St. Augustine’s Sermons on the N/T:
  1. Sermons 51-94 (on the New Testament) and
  2. Sermons, 148-183 (on the New Testament)
My main interest, at this time, is what Augustine taught about the Real Presence of Christ, in the Eucharist, so I need to focus on John 6, for now.

Those of you who have read his sermons, could you recommend which of the above volumes I need for this particular teaching?

If I had the $$$, I’d order both, however, it’s not the best time to spend so much at once.

Thanks again, and God Bless you!

Wow, great link! I’ve just spent the last hour there, I wasn’t sure I could pull myself away! Kinda like CA Forums!😃
If you thought the above site was great you really should check out the newer version of the fathers at the same web site. it is about 90% complete and I am looking forward to their completion and its availbility on CD Version 3 the new version has each book hooked up with some indexes near the bottom particularly the Scriptural index for each book which links automatically to the fathers in that book siting the scripture quotation and what they had to say. ccel.org/fathers.html It is dynamite nothing like it available anywhere.

Hey, thanks again for the great link. Looks like I could spend the rest of the decade going through all this. 😉
