I have heard from a non-catholic website that the Seraphic doctor of the Church, St Bonaventure, “substitutes Mary for the Creator and Lord of the universe, making in effect Mary the fourth person of the Godhead.”

The website quotes the psalms, and then quotes St Bonaventure, for example: Psalm 1:1
Text as presented on the website:

"Bonaventure’s psalter - Blessed is the man, O Virgin Mary, who loves thy name, thy grace will comfort his soul.

Bible - Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners,"

It seems here, that St Bonaventure is supposedly replacing the Lord with the Blessed Virgin Mary. Obviously this is ridiculous and cannot be true, but how would i go about answering this preposterous claim?

If St. Bonaventure was so keen on replacing God with Mary, why did he only do so to the Psalms and not the entire Bible which contains more direct claims of Godhood?

A couple of things come to mind:
(1) There is no need to answer the claim, other than in the resolve of your faith and your heart. You are unlikely to convince those who have a motive to discredit our faith.
(2) Psalm 1:1 and the Psalter of Bonaventure are two different things, and Bonaventure does not discount or attempt to usurp the spiritual sense of David’s Psalm…Bonaventure is presenting devotion to Mary, and her saintly intercession, as part of our spiritual arsenal to ensure we are capable of being one who "walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners…We pray to Rosary to ask Mary’s intercession in helping us from doing just that!

Thanks for the reply, it makes a lot of sense. St Bonaventure created the psalter to the Blessed Virgin Mary, in light of the Psalms

Blessed is the man, O Virgin Mary, who loves thy name, thy grace will comfort his soul.
There’s nothing wrong with this.
First of all, St. Bonaventure wasn’t trying to rewrite Scripture or say we should throw out the existing Psalms and use these ones to Mary instead. He simply used the Psalms as a model for writing some optional Mary prayers. Nothing wrong with that.

Second, with respect to the specific Psalm, there’s nothing wrong with loving Mary’s name (she is included in the Divine Praises too, after all) and she is the dispenser of graces, a task given her by God.

I don’t see any reason to answer the 1,000th “non-catholic website” that posts ignorant things about Mary and Catholic saints. It would just fall on deaf ears if you did answer.

God isn’t being replaced with that example
