Hello everyone,

I was reading about St. Faustina Kowalska on a Vatican web page and it said she had many gifts, including “the rare gift of mystical engagement and marriage”. I’ve never heard of this before. Does anyone know what it means? Thanks! And by the way, I just love this web site!

God Bless you all,

Tasha

Hello Tasha!

Welcome to the forums!

Now I’m not 100% sure, but I think the gift of spiritual marriage and engagement is when a person ( a religious) is intently aware of being married to Christ or engaged to Him. When St. Faustina professed her perpetual vows, she heard Christ say to her: “My spouse, our hearts are joined forever.
Remember to Whom you have vowed…” (Diary 239)

I remember also, a story of a saint ( I can’t remember who unfortunatly) who Jesus appeared to and he was dressed as a bridegroom and placed a wreath of marriage on her head- this was to signify that she would become a religious sister and indeed, became married to Christ.

Hope this helps!

Jade.

I will just add if you haven’t read St. Faustina’s diary, I highly recommend you do. It is a life changing experience.

This is true…I have read it 3 times…the last time due to a penace coming out of reconciliation. I was blessed again and again…

The mystical union she experienced is the highest form of apiritual union…no different than Theresa of Avila and many others. they go into a rapture and by infusion, refuse much Light from Jesus. They truly are ‘married’ to Jesus in the highest sense of the word. This mystical union also comes with a price and the person lives a life no different than Jesus. Betrayal, suffering, etc…he allows His ‘spouses’ to experience His own sufferings to redeem souls. Blessed Katherine Emmerich went through the sdame thing. There is also much humiliation…

You only need to read St Faustina or Blessed Catherien to find out what they went through. Just as a man penetrates a woman in a loving covenantal relationship, so does Jesus with His spouse. But it is much more deep in the sp[iritual sense than what any marriage can provide. You lose yourself in Him who is pure Love. Jesus also prepares the one whom He chooses for mystical union as pain is so very much part of the picture. That is why most of these who experience rapture suffer so much in conjunction with Jesus…[/color]

The entire Body of Christ is also the Bride of Christ. So in a powerful sense, we are ALL brides of Christ - even us guys. Now, what Saint Faustina experienced, as have others, is the total submission of her will to Christ’s will. In so doing, she becomes one with Christ, her purpose and His purpose for her are unified and the same. That is why when we marry a spouse here on earth, Jesus said we become one flesh. We experience a sacramental and mystical unity that foreshadows our oneness with Christ. Only by coming to that place where our will is completely surrendered to Christ as His was to His Father when He said, “Not My will, but Yours be done.”.
