May I add that many (if not most) in the West Syrian tradition also designate him as “of Nineveh”.AnthonyJ,
Yes, he is one of the great spiritual writers of the Assyrian-Chaldean tradition. We generally don’t refer to him as St. Isaac the Syrian though, instead, we call him St. Isaac of Nineveh.
God bless,

Indeed. I think Syrian is a Greek designation - I always thought it would be strange if we called, for instance, Mor Ephrem Suryoyo in SuryoyoMay I add that many (if not most) in the West Syrian tradition also designate him as “of Nineveh”.
Two questions: would you say that he is as big in the West Syrian churches as in the East Syrian churches?May I add that many (if not most) in the West Syrian tradition also designate him as “of Nineveh”.
I’m very much a big believer that Syriac tradition epitomizes lex orandi, lex credendi - if you have any spare time, Peter, try to read his work on asceticism or any of his homilies. I, unfortunately, don’t have an off-hand source to give you that is from a completely biased Byzantine perspective. The barebones of his hagiography is that he was a monk who sought internal silence and reflection to be with God, was unwillingly elected a bishop and ran away a few days after his enthronement to a monastery. Two questions: would you say that he is as big in the West Syrian churches as in the East Syrian churches?
Also, is there a good, brief, resource about him? (I’m pretty ignorant of him.)
