While I was little, I read a story about the war between England and France in an adventure novel in which you select the outcome of the story depends on what page you turn to when given a choice.

Some page lead me to the Maid of Orleans in which I believed at that time was an English Hero. How wrong I am to learn later that St. Joan of Arc liberated the French from English rule. My question is that why would God help one country versus another, ie. helping the French against the British? Aren’t they both Catholics at that time too?

Warmest regards,
-Ben

This topic always confused me too.

Besides the fact that at that time both France and England were Catholic, the English at that time had superior morals since they had a very basic concept of human rights which would eventualy develop. Also, the King of England did have a legitimate claim to the French throne, so one could argue that he was in the right to invade France.

I think it was quite an unjust war from the English point of view though - certainly both the extent and actual conduct of the English campaigns in France went well beyond legitimate self-defence or anything, rather it was purely for self-aggrandising expansion of English power.

I think God was more simply making a point that no king or country should get too big for their britches, and that he was the final arbiter in all matters, regardless of how militarily strong one side in a war may feel that they are.
