Yesterday i was reading through the office and there was a homily by Chrysostom on the book of John. I see that St.Andrew knew Jesus was the messiah after a very short stay with him. Why is it that it was not much of a big deal with fireworks UNTIL St.Peter acknowledge that Jesus was Christ the messiah.

Also another super silly question. Is “Christ” the surname of Jesus?

I don’t think the acknowledgement of Jesus as the Messiah by Andrew was as big a deal as the acknowledgement of His divinity by Peter as St. John Chrysostom seems to indicate in his commentary on John 1:42, explaining why the events described in Matt. 16 came later and were more powerful:
And observe, that not even the prediction is fully set forth; for Jesus did not say, “I will change your name to Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church,” but, “You shall be called Cephas.” The former speech would have expressed too great authority and power; for Christ does not immediately nor at first declare all His power, but speaks for a while in a humbler tone; and so, when He had given the proof of His Divinity, He puts it more authoritatively, saying, “Blessed are you, Simon, because My Father has revealed it to you;” and again, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church.”

Yes but what the Messiah was may still not have been clear to him. The Essenes of Qumran expected a military figure Messiah and this may have been the common concept.
