“Those who go to dances renounce Jesus Christ.” And that was when a racy dance was probably the waltz. I don’t think he’s speaking infallibly.
 
St. John Vianney - it is said - that the devil himself - said about him - if there were more Priests like him - the world would change. He was 1840, 1850, in his hey day 😇 . I read a book about him. Pretty interesting. There’s even a old movie about him. He reminds of what Padre Pio was like !

I have never read anything he had written, and just skimmed what was in the link. Maybe what he says is true. But his delivery…🤔 It’s really off putting. I doubt I will read further. It sounds like no one can ever be good enough, sinless enough.

Well, I understand what you are saying, but we do go to confession. His writing could make people think, why bother, it’s no use.

Sounds like a comment against abortion and contraception.

He had a tough crowd to deal with in Ars, so I guess he responded in kind.

Only my opinion.
 
The Church has made him patron of parish priests for a reason.

The dancing he was dealing with in post-revolution France was not tame and it was leading his flock away from Christ and into sin. That doesn’t mean all dancing is sinful or the Church is wrong for allowing good kinds.

In any event, the fruit of his preaching was evident in the spiritual transformation of his parish.
 
He is warning against the sin of presumption, whereas one sins throughout life rejecting the grace of repentance, with the intention instead of repenting at the end of life in order to get away with it all. In fact, he says that in reality, it is not God who has abandoned that person, but the other way around:
“Would you not agree with me that a Christian who despises so many graces deserves to be abandoned and rejected because he has not listened to the voice of God or profited by His graces? On the contrary, my dear brethren, it is God Himself Who is scorned by this ungrateful soul who would seem to wish to put Him to death again.”

You’re correct.

No one can be good enough or sinless enough, that’s why we need God, that’s why He sent His only Son down here.

At the end of every homily St. Vianney writes “this is what I desire for you.” He really wants us to be with God in heaven, and so had to use some strategies which sound to some “uncomfortable.” Are we here to be comfortable?

He also spent around 16 hours a day in the confessional and could read people’s hearts before they opened their mouths to confess. They had special trains full of people just so they could go to confession to him. I’d be terrified of going to confession to him, but then it’d well be worth it. He wanted everyone to have salvation. He also got attacked by the devil, one night his bed was set on fire.

Maybe it would help to read some good books about him. He didn’t have a really good education, so that may also be why some of his homilies sound they way they do. He’s really worth looking into, especially in our relativistic society.
