St. John Votive Mass

What would the color of the Mass be for a votive Mass of St. John the Baptist? White or red? I know he was a martyr, but his main feast uses white.

For St, John the Theologian, or Evangelist, I like Theologian better, on his Dec 27 Feast what is the color, white or red? Since he has another feast of St John by the Latin Gate, where he was almost martyred but they failed the attempt with divine intervention, I bet that feast would use red and the Dec one use white but I’m not sure.

In Australia, the feast of St John the Evangelist calls for white vestments.

I have never heard of the feast of St John by the Latin Gate. Is this feast on the main calendar or only on a local one?

I thought that only St John the Baptist and St Joseph had two feastdays.

Well, the BVM has about 5 or more.
St. John by the Latin Gate is in the Tridentine calendar, in April, I believe. You might want to Google it.

Oddly enough, there is a 7 May feast of St. John on the Byzantine Calendar–and it’s still there.**

I thought that only St John the Baptist and St Joseph had two feastdays.

On the Byzantine Calendar, many saints have two days. Frequently is their heavenly birthday (day of death) and the day of their glorification.

The feast of St. John before the Latin gate was removed from the general calendar in 1961 but the mass was retained in the appendix ‘Pro Aliquibus Locis’ in the missal. Formerly, the opinion was that the votive Mass of St. John the Evangelist outside Eastertide would use the Mass of the feast and be in white, and during Eastertide would use the Mass ‘ante portam Latinam’ and be in red.

However, in the 1962 missal, the rubric indicates that the Mass of the feast should be used, and Propers (e.g. Tract/ Alleluia) are provided for other seasons so the colour will be white.

The votive Mass of St. John the Baptist will always be in white and the Propers are taken from his feast day with the collect from the vigil.

Apart from Our Blessed Lady, St Paul has the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul, and St Peter has the Feast of the Chair of Peter, as well as Sts Peter and Paul having their joint feastday (June 29 I believe)
