Question about St. Joseph’s U in Philadelphia: How “Catholic” is it? Is there more of a Catholic presence than, say, simply having a Mass on Sunday? Is there a Catholic identity that reaches beyond the letterhead?

St. Joes had a problem with girl softball and hazing in 2015. We crossed it out of our sons college choices because of this…

Idk if changes were made…

I’m from the area. Google St Joseph’s professor controversy. I’m not sure how the administration resolved this finally.

Got it. Thanks.

I’m mostly concerned with student residential life. Without naming any names, my daughter is at a Catholic university where the alcohol and marijuana use is rampant and there’s no “school spirit.” She doesn’t fit in with the student body and wants to get out.

I realize college students are going to do those things, but what we’re hoping to find is a school where there are enough like-minded students. She is, herself, focused on Catholic colleges so I’m hoping she’ll find a place that embodies Catholicism, not necessarily to the extent of someplace like Steubenville. 🤷

I don’t know if this is still true today, but when we looked at southern schools for our DD, we found them to be much more conservative than those in the NE. Even her secular university had an active Neumann Club and inter-faith anti-abortion groups.

Unless you look at something like Brigham Young or Furman, alcohol is going to be present to some degree or other on most campuses.

Have you thought about checking the Newman Guide? Here’s there current chart of recommendations which will all have the Catholic identity component. She will have to check for comfort level and major fields of study. It might help if we had a sense of her preferred areas of study.

The National Catholic Register also has a series of recommendations:

I hope your daughter is able to find the perfect school and program.
May God bless her.
Amen.

Any large Catholic college in the US will have a number of solid, conscientious practicing Catholics.

And I mean any–my husband is an academic and has taught at a Catholic college that is perenially on the “naughty” list–but nonetheless, there are a lot of good people there.

I do not promise that the same is true of all small Catholic colleges, but (in our experience) it is true of the big ones.
Got it. Thanks.

Their men’s basketball team went undefeated in 2003-2004 NCAA men’s regular season behind Delonte West and Jameer Nelson. What that says about their fidelity to the Church, I have no idea.

We heard a talk by their b-ball coach, and he is very devout. The proximity of the University to the Offices of the Archdiocese of Philly is a plus. Archbishop Chaput is great. And I know they have wonderful community outreach.

I know nothing about hazing of controversial professors. Catholic U in D.C. might be a good consideration. Or De Sales University in Allentown, PA. Always hear good things about them and know many happy grads from there.
