Does anyone have information on St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN? Is it faithful to Catholic teaching? Or does it try to conform teaching to fit modern society?

thanks for any information!
 
Their website seems suggests that they adhere to Catholic teaching, but I would say that it is difficult to know unless you visit.
 
We plan on visiting this summer. I was hoping for some feedback from people who may have first hand knowledge…web sites can only tell you so much. 🙂

Going there this weekend for a wedding!

I cannot speak to St. Mary’s in particular, but every college, regardless of affiliation, will have some degree of liberal ‘modernization.’ FWIW, the young lady I know who attended there is a wonderfully Catholic woman, and remained so during and after her time there.
 
The people I know who have attended or sent their children were practicing Catholics who would not have tolerated anything less than a faithful Catholic education for themselves or their kids. However, there are several ways to get answer directly from phone calls to visits. In addition, there are generally alumnus who can be contacted, so you should be able to get your answers fairly easily,

I am not familiar with this college. The best website I have seen to evaluate this is by Cardinal Newman Society. My own suggestions:
  1. Find out who were the graduation speakers or who got honorary degrees in recent years. Then Google any politicians or celebrities, with the words “abortion”, or “same sex marriage”.
  2. Ask if the college has chosen to respond to Ex Corde Ecclesiae. Most have not.
  3. Visit the bookstore, in person or online. You may see, or otherwise learn, what texts are assigned for Religion classes. You could also ask the Department itself.
  4. Are there coed dorms? Or 24 hour visitation? Even if your child would not be living in a dorm, this gives you an idea of where the college stands in general.
  5. Visit the chapel. Can you find the Blessed Sacrament and a crucifix, right away? How often is Mass scheduled when college is in session? Is Mass celebrated here, and/or somewhere else? If it is only regularly held in another room, which holds 20 people, that tells you something. Some colleges have elegant chapels for parents and alumni to see, but students never see that chapel.
  6. Check the bulletin board outside the Campus Ministry or chapel. Notices about service projects to help the poor are good, but be wary if too many notices seem to promote the same concerns as the secular media. Any mention of pro life or pro marriage? Under Campus Ministry, is there a priest who has overall responsibility? or a non-priest?
  7. Pray for discernment. This should have been my first suggestion.

St. Mary’s College is a women’s college so co-ed dorms is a moot point.

Thank you everyone!

As luck would have (or more like divine intervention) I met a woman at a reception after a special mass I attended with friends. This woman’s sister, nieces and a few friends have all attended St. Mary’s and will be giving me their names, and that of a young lady they know who just graduated from St. Mary’s.

God is good! He knows what we need and when. 😃
