During the time of St Patrick were Christians Catholics or were they just called Christians before Catholics came into being?
When did the separation between Catholics and other religions begin?

The Christian Church came to be called Catholic, as the universal Christian Church.
The word “Catholic” means “universal”

The Protestant Churches came into being following the Protestant Reformation that began in 1517, afer Martin Luther posted the *Ninety-Five Theses *in an effort to reform the Catholic Church from what some saw as false doctrines and malpractices of the Church.

St Patrick lived in the fourth and fifth century. This was before there was any split within the Church. During his day there was only one Church.
