St Peter Chanel

Lately I have become very interested in learning more about St Peter Chanel and have found interesting information on his life. (Some special circumstances brought about this increased interest).

Does anyone know of any miracles/answers to prayer that were worked through his intercession?

(Saint Peter Chanel was born in France in 1803. He was ordained a priest in 1827 and became a Marist Father in 1831. His martyrdom took place on Futuna Island on the 28th of April, l84l. His remains rested in Sydney in 1849* and were returned to Futuna in 1977. St. Peter Chanel was declared a Saint in 1954 and his feastday is on the 28th of April).

*One of the places that his relics rested in Sydney was at the former Marist Fathers Seminary at Toongabbie, which is now the site of Campion College. It rested in a tiny sandstone chapel for a few days when in transit from Futuna island to France.

Nice to see someone from Sydney here. i went often to campion college before it was a college. Fr Christopher, a franciscan, used to reside there. A priest i know took school kids there for an outing regularly.

I know Fr Christopher. The homeschoolers had their gatherings there during his time of residence and Fr Christopher has also said Mass in my parish at Doonside.

I went to Mass at Doonside today. Fr Hogans 11am Latin Mass. I may continue there for a while. I’m not a regular Latin Mass goer but wanted to show my brother as he’s fed up with the goings on at the parishes around us. It’s a small world.

As well as Father Hogan doing the Mass in the extraordinary form, Our parish priest says Mass in English in the ordinary form. Our parish has two priests in residence. Fr Hogan is the Latin Mass chaplain for the diocese.

For those of you interested in the Life of Peter Chanel you can find an accurate life of the Saint on

I have attempted to get as accurate as I can the information on the site. You will however find in many other places inaccurate information on Peter Chanel.

Honestly he seems to have been such a lovely man. He was so sad at leaving France he could not even bear to say goodbye to his Mum and asked his sister (who was already a Marist Sister by this stage) to do that for him since it seemed too painful.

On the journey from France to Futuna his very good friend Claude Bret died just a short time after their departure. Peter was devastated and cried for days. A priest in those days just did not do that - you were supposed to have enough faith to believe that everything was well … and I guess it was. Peter however was so sad.
