St Pio and the LOTH

Looking ahead September 23, Friday is the Memorial for St Pio. In the LOTH there is nothing specific in the Office of the Reading by or about him. Or special prayers. I was wondering if the powers that be are working on that and how long it takes? I checked at universalis and their second reading is not specific to him. My supplement contains nothing on it as well. Did I miss something? I know his memorial is new.

Memorials don’t always contain a specific reading.

I am sure that this is part of the revised LOTH that is being worked on but as has been said elsewhere, do not expect this any time soon.

You could look up the common for holy men (religious) or for pastors (though I don’t think he was actually a pastor) towards the back of the breviary. You might have options for prayers and antiphons so it could be useful to preview them.

Liturgy Of The Hours

This is a collection of prayers that priests and religious say throughout the day (lay people are encouraged to participate, as well). It is also known as the Divine Office.

The book(s) that contain these prayers are also known at the “Liturgy of the Hours,” “Christian Prayer,” or the “breviary.”

(so it’s not computerese but Catholicese - I’m still learning terms all the time, too)

It’s sad that Padre Pio was canonized. He represents to millions in the wider world what strikes them as residual superstition in Catholicism.

 I don't care to argue the point. Just to make it. Catholicism needs to take great care not to be represented by those whose integrity and/or mental health is questionable. It's important that the Church be kept free of scandals and scams.

 This is not to argue that Padre Pio didn't do much good in some respects. But there also is much said and written about him is hard for people in our time and place to accept.

As you are not Catholic I will just tell you that the Catholic Church did not make Saint Pio a saint, God did that. The Catholic Church only acknowledged that fact.

St. Pio’s integrity and mental health were examined thoroughly during his life and afterward.

That you pay more attention to his detractors (who have been rehashing the same arguments since his life) in the face of such thorough examination is unfortunate.

Your refusal to face challenges to your sad statement is cowardice.

There is a concluding prayer for St Pio.

I’ve seen this prayer floating around the online versions of the LOTH, but it’s not actually a proper prayer. If you look up the Common of Pastors, you’ll see that it is the generic prayer with the saints name inserted into it.

God our Father,
in Saint N. you gave
a light to your faithful people.
You made him a pastor of the Church
to feed your sheep with his word
and to teach them by his example.
Help us by his prayers to keep the faith he taught
and follow the way of life he showed us.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

iBreviary does have a proper Second Reading, but I haven’t been able to find where they got it from, so I think you can be safe in not using it (as it doesn’t appear in the approved translations), or using it if you want.

There is a proper prayer. It’s of course too new to appear in any version of the LOTH, but your diocesan (or Conference of Bishops) Ordo should have it. The CCCB Ordo has it. Unfortunately I only have the French version but if anyone is interested this is it in French:

Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, par une grâce extraordinaire tu as donné au Père Pio de participer à la croix de ton Fils et, par son ministère, tu as renouvelé les merveilles de ta miséricorde; Accorde-nous d’être sans cesse unis aux souffrances du Christ et de parvenir avec bonheur à la gloire de la résurrection. Generally, the closing prayer for the LOTH is the same as the collect for the Mass. I have a copy of Magnificat, so I’ll probably just take the prayer from the Mass texts.
