I love both Star Trek and Star Wars.
As far as Star Trek is concerned I loved TOS, TNG, and DS9 the most. I wasn’t quite so interested in Voyager. I just never could manage to care very much for the characters, except maybe the Doctor. I liked the characters in Enterprise but in my opinion, the plots were not so great. Archer didn’t seem to behave in a consistent manor. And I REALLY disliked the way they were always messing with the timeline. I could have handled once, maybe twice a season but time seemed to be an overall theme of the series*. That struck me as disrespectful to the other Trek series. The sad thing was that I thought the best episods of Enterprise were in the later part of the third season.
I definitely favored episodes IV, V, and VI of Star Wars. I’m also a big fan of the novels that take place AFTER Return of the Jedi. I wasn’t against the idea of episodes I, II, and III. But I just never really liked the characters very much. My favorite was QuiGon but when all is said and done, I’m not sure what the point of that particular character was.
One of the problems I had with both Enterprise and episodes I, II, and III of Star Wars was that modern budgets and technology made the sets and special effects more important than the story and characters.
I realize that the SW episodes I, II, and III were supposed to take place in the glory days of the Republic and that years of war had taken their toll by episodes IV, V, and VI. And I have no problem with special effects. But I still want to have the plot and characters stand out.
I would have liked Enterprise to have taken a bit of a minimalist look so that the sets didn’t overshadow TOS so much.
At the moment I am a big fan of Stargate:SG-1. I think it has the best aspects of both Star Trek and Star Wars and it has no problem admitting it has shamelessly stolen them. It knows how to poke fun at itself without overdoing it.
