Hello everyone,

I have been an in-home daycare provider for 5 years now and I have been thinking of restructuring my daycare so that it is a Catholic daycare and serves Catholic families. Do I need permission from the Church to do this? I Googled “Catholic daycare” but all I got were daycares associated with specific churches.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

😃

I think you would be opening up a can of worms if you were to limit it to just Catholic families Would you expel current families if for the only reason why that they weren’t Catholic?.

You do need permission from your bishop to use the term Catholic in your ministry/business.

No need to “expel” anyone…simply explain that the daycare is going to be restructured and will be based on Catholic morals and teachings. If anyone objects to this, they’ll leave of their own accord.

Leave Catholic out of the name, as stated earlier.

But there’s nothing that says you can’t pick a name that screams “Catholic” without actually using the word. Agnus Dei. Ave Maria. Corpus Christi. You get the idea. 😉

How 'bout “Lambs of God Daycare”

Will Fridays will be tuna or PBJ sandwiches?

Can I name it after a saint?

I was thinking of St. Peter’s Family Daycare and underneath the name adding, “Feed my lambs… Tend my sheep… Feed my sheep.”

I like the idea! Why couldn’t you name it after a saint? Good luck! Have you looked up the URLs yet?

Just wondering. Does the Church have a copyright on the word “Catholic?”

I honestly do not know if this is true. I know there are issues with youth groups and what not being formed outside of a parish setting with no pastorial authority. However, I do not know if this extends to day care centers. I would schedule an appointment with your parish priest to ask him such a question.

I think it’d be a good idea to give yourself a Catholic sounding name though. It sounds more affectionate.

It is. Michael Voris is at odds with his local Bishop over realcatholictv. lifesitenews.com/news/archdiocese-of-detroit-asks-michael-voris-to-stop-using-the-name-catholic/

I would suggest calling the diocese (as opposed to the priest) and see if they have a legal counsel that you could ask those questions to – someone who would know what you can and can’t do that could in any way intimate that it is something affiliated with a particular church. You wouldn’t want to give the perception of it being a church-sanctioned center because that could open them up to liability. However, in your advertising materials you could say something along the lines of “a center geared towards rearing your children in the Catholic faith tradition.”
