Dear Catholics,

I want with some friends of my parish start a youth group in my city and the first meeting I wanna start with catechesis.
Do someone know a good subject to begin with? We don’t wanna start to difficult. But most are also catholics so it must not be to easy

Thanks!

Several questions:

What is wrong with your parish youth group?
How old are the kids you want to invite?
Have you secured a priest to oversee it?
Have you contacted the Diocese for approval?
Have all of your volunteers been screened for VIRTUS or Safe Environment?
Are any of the certified to teach?
Where do you plan to meet?
What materials do you plan to use?
Have a curriculum?
Have music?

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Contact your priest and/or diocese. There may be materials available for use and some good ideas about what has worked in other groups.

I’d suggest you first find out about another parish that already has a functioning youth group, and ask them what they suggest. I also suggest you don’t talk to them alone but take one or more of your other proposed leaders with you.

Once you’ve got your list of suggested activities and catechesis materials together, have a meeting with your proposed group leaders, plus your parish priest, and figure out the details.

Then, when you’ve got his permission, just jump in at the deep end. You’ll inevitably make some mistakes along the way, but that’s often the only way to learn.

I would contact your diocese as hopefully they will have some appropriate teaching materials that you could use to plan a course. On a practical level do you have a location for the group? I assume by youth you mean under 18s, are you aware of any regulations in your area for volunteers working with under 18s to have criminal records checks? In the UK this would be a DBS check.

It sounds like you have a group of people already but it would be good to advertise in case there are any teens in the area looking for something like that.

I hope you get the details sorted and it goes well 🙂

This kind of goes along with what pianistclare posted why have a separate group from the parish youth group. Sounds exclusive to me.

Do we even know that this is a separate youth group? The OP didn’t mention that their parish already has one.

Why would you need a second one?
I mean is this proposed group a second additional one? The OP hasn’t mentioned an existing youth group, I read the situation as a parish with no youth groups and the OP looking to start one. I could be wrong though.

Other advice by the posters are good. Listen to them 🙂

Imo I think it would be a good idea to ask them to write down the questions they have about the church. And answer them throughout.

Anyway, I think starting out with the basic “if God is good, why is there suffering on earth” question. Most youths are into social justice movements and it’s expected that they would be critical of the idea of a “just and loving God”.

I haven’t looked into this yet but try out Focus. Apparently they have materials for Bible study.
