State-Licensed Killers

The Dec 2005 issue of Christian Politics has an article about the proposed “Physician-Assisted Dying” Bill under the heading** “Prospect of State-Licensed Killers**”. It reports that “Having failed to win doctors round in the last parliament, supporters of Lord Joffe have introduced a new ‘Physician Assisted Dying’ Bill. If some of those who have been arguing for a change in the law get their way, it could lead to the creation of a new profession of state-licensed killers."

“The proposed new law would not allow doctors to administer lethal drugs, but it would allow them to prescribe it for DIY jobs. They would also be allowed to offer means to assist, and if it all went horribly wrong, they would be allowed to finish people off.”

But apparently most doctors do not want to get into killing their patients rather than healing them so the new bill proposes to hand this job over to “specialists”. Their sole purpose, says this report, would be to end life. “we could very soon see a whole new breed of non-medical operatives taking the place of palliative care doctors - thanatologists whose job will be to kill patients – practitioners of death, travelling the country in specially equipped white death vans, controlled no doubt by Health and Safety inspectors.” – I think they are quoting Lord David Alton here.

The article also reports the sneaky way that this bill is being progressed. The British Medical Association (BMA) voted on 11th July 2005, at it’s AGM to be politically “neutral” over future euthanasia legislation. Doctors protest that the vote had been slipped in when most delegates had gone home.

It also reports that 95% of Doctors who responded to an invitation in the British Medical Journal’s “a Time To Die” feature (24 Sept) opposed any change in the law. The Disability Rights Commission argues that every disability group in the country opposes voluntary euthanasia because of the danger of abuse.

It also reports that in a letter was signed by all UK faith leaders (RC. CofE, Muslim, Hindu, Judaism, Buddhist, Sikh, Greek Orthodox, Evangelical Alliance) was sent to every MP and member of the House of Lords opposing the Joffe Bill. The letter was carefully released to the press and media to get maximum impact. Yet the media ignored it. It reports that the BBC published 30 ‘religious’ stories on the internet the next day but ignored the letter. The only secular news was the Daily Telegraph which gave it minor coverage on page 2.
The report says “clearly we are up against a huge, powerful and sophisticated enemy."
