If one wishes to make the Way of the Cross is it necessary to walk around the church and stop at each Station; or, can one remain in their pew and say the prayer for each Station.

I never see anyone actually walk from Station to Station any more.

I have a small, beautiful travel case that has a picture of each station and a Crucifix in the center. I have had this case for years (over 40). I wonder, can I stay in my pew and use this travel case to pray the Way of the Cross? 🤷

I have seen people walk around the church still. Isn’t that the point? It’s for the people who couldn’t go to Jerusalem; they wanted to take the pilgrimage and walk in Jesus’ footsteps, but, since they couldn’t, they made the stations of the cross and walked from station to station.

Why would one want to stay stationary if one is going to do this?

If you have this case and would like to say the Stations of the Cross, why even go to a church to do it? It seems that this would be a good alternative to one who cannot make it to a church.

During Lent
on Fridays, my school attended Stations of The Cross. This is one of the blessings of going to a Catholic school, even though I resented it at times I now see the wisdom of teaching children prayers and tradition that will last a lifetime.
There was NO WAY that we could have followed the priest around
from station to station.
The children remained in their pews and followed along with the
prayer books.

I can’t always get to my church to pray the stations, so I have a book, “The Way of the Cross for the Holy Souls in Purgatory” by Susan Tassone. I use it when I can’t get there. It works for me and I assume, since the heart is there, the prayers will not be rejected.

You’re wrong. **You have to move, unless you’re part of a group, and it’s impractical. In that case, one person moves from station to station on the group’s behalf. **

As a previous poster has said, the stations are to mimic the ones in Jerusalem. This indulgence was granted to the Franciscans, because they couldn’t go to Jerusalem.

[From memory:] To be absolutely sure of getting the indulgence, the stations have to have a cross of wood. This cross is the actual station, the accompanying picture is an accessory.

Also, ideally, they should have been blessed by a Franciscan.
