Where can I find some reliable statistics on the percentages of priests who have been found guilty of sex offences?
I fear the “man in the street” has a completely wrong view of these numbers, being led in the wrong direction by the media.
It would good to be able to retort with some hard numbers rather than hearing the same old line from non-believers about our priests.
The vast majority of our priests are our role models and must be aware of our support at this time.

Out of the twelve whom Jesus called, one fell by the wayside.

Certainly, because of the betrayal by the few, at the hands of the media, within the minds of many people, the many can suffer loss of reputation respect and credibility.

It is the case that some accused priests are actually innocent…I’ve personally known a couple who were cleared by civil enquiry

The following may or not be accurate, and not all accused are guilty

google John Jay Report, issued in 2002 and updated this year, as an outside group was hired to compile these statistics

Good studies found that Most Priests accused were Not Guilty of anything serious. See the John Jay School of Law study for USA results; most of ther few thousand serious allegations did not have merit; only a Few Percent of Priests were accused. One accusation in Kenya is not worth listing. The top Treator of Protestant pedophiles and sex abuse stated on Kojo Knambe PBS Hour Interview that he feels the Protestant Clerguy Rate is about 33%; The BSA Scoutmasters were found to have a rate more than three times as great as Catholic Priests.
I followed the matter extensivelly to completion 8 years ago, and found it as Cardinal Ratzinger then wrote, to be largelly a matter Media Blitz, major false inuendo thart turned Many against the Priesthood, which is an ideal call to idealism.

PJM your link I can’t click on.
“The Nature and Scope of the Problem of Sexual Abuse of Minors
by Catholic Priests and Deacons in the United States
A Research Study Conducted by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice”

Google this or part of it.

My first time uploading pics or anything, hope it works. Anyways… these are both based on the findings of the John Day Report, and it really shows how JPII and BXVI have really done some serious work in combating sex-abuse. Let’s not forget Cardinal Ratzinger being the Head of the Congregation of the Doctrine for the Faith.

Good job, Semper! And the USCCB Adopted a Mandatory Zero Tolerance Policy for Every Dioces in the USA after the Classic Non-Catholic Law School independent Study, cited. It’s important to know that the very Nature of Pedophelia was not Known until 20 years ago: Not Correctable Attitude problem, but almost incurable Mental problem. But Most of the Allegations were about Abuse of One Minor, only some Children. And the John Jay Study found Most allegations were Untrue, or unprovable.
Catholic Anti-Pedophelia Standards have been described as tougher than the FBI's.

I can’t find it but I had statistics done by a jewish rabbi in new york that showed that the catholic church had the lowest abuse rate of all religions(including jewish). The Catholic church was around 4-5%, Jewish were around 7% and Protestants were around 20%? I think it might have been up to 30% actually, I can’t remember the last statistic. I just focused on how Catholic and jewish were the lowest and was surprised to see that protestant was the highest.

Also I believe the statistics show accusations, not actual convictions which would be lower. The statistic came out within the last 2 years.
