I link this essay under Moral Theology because most of the statistics we refuse to collect seem to have a moral dimension. Which is probably why we prefer not to pursue them.

Statistics We Refuse to Collect

Can someone allow me to like your post more than once. The article is excellent. I’ve been screaming about how politicians and the media have been committing acts of torture against statistics worse than those at Guantanamo for a while.
I’ll add they have also used faulty statistics to smear Christians as hypocritical when proper analyses show many or most depending on what the issue is live up to them.
I don’t like Trump but I was laughing when those on the Left said 2016 was the beginning of the post-Truth era. No, that started in the 1960s. Equally laughable was the claim it’s now Orwell’s 1984. Orwell was criticising both left and right, arguably more the Marxists, whose many ideological genes are found in today’s ‘liberalism’ and even ‘conservatives’.

A little over half those stats are probably uncollected. Though I take issue with what is implied regarding marriage/divorce rates and never married. Yes divorce is down partially due to fewer marriages, but cohabitation didn’t make up the entire difference. There are a lot of single people not dating (no committed relationship or any recent dates).

This all is related to something I have been thinking about lately. The thought keeps reoccurring to me that the term ‘science’ has been co-opted by ideological groups who want to push their ideology. I mean, what is better to manipulate the public with than “facts”, right?

Unfortunately (maybe purposefully IDK) the rise in the manipulation of ‘science’ has coincided with a downward trend in the public’s ability to think critically. There is a very heavy emphasis on science in schools today, but its not science in the traditional sense of the word. Its a science which simply throws around the word “science” as a label fixed to anything that is observable. There is virtually no acknowledgements to critical thinking, and/or classical education subjects like logic, debating, persuasive writing, etc…

Common sense seems to be one of the only cards left to play.

I appreciate the point the author is trying to make. However, citing Fr. Burtchaell, even if he repented before death (and I would hope he did) really detracts from the credibility of the essay.
